Chapter Twenty-Six: An Unexpected Discovery (Part Two)
Bang—
With two violent coughs, the two were hurled, miraculously unharmed, into the shallow, muddy waters of the lake, their bodies half-submerged in the muck.
“My god, I’m still alive!” Fang He shouted in excitement, amazed that he hadn’t been killed by the fall, oblivious to the vine whip that was silently lashing toward the back of his head.
“Get down!” Mo Han thrust his palm against Fang He’s back, pressing him flat into the mud just in time for the vine whip to slice through the air above them, missing by a hair’s breadth. Mo Han exhaled in relief.
“Mo Han! What the hell are you doing?” Fang He wiped mud from his face, yelling at Mo Han.
“If it weren’t for me, you’d be dead already! Watch out—!” Mo Han barked, shoving Fang He back into the mud as another vine whip whipped past dangerously close.
“Damn it, Mo Han!” Fang He struggled to lift his mud-smeared face, pointing at Mo Han in fury.
“Careful!” Mo Han replied by pressing him down again.
“Damn it! I swear, if you push me down one more time, I’ll dig up your ancestors’ graves tomorrow!” Fang He threatened, nearly leaping out of the mud.
Mo Han slapped him down without a word.
“That thing didn’t even whip at us this time! Mo Han, are you doing this on purpose?” Fang He glared at the shallow pit forming beneath his face, his teeth clenched in rage.
“And if I am?” Mo Han’s forehead pulsed with veins; Fang He’s mouth was asking for trouble. If Mo Han hadn’t saved him, his corpse would be lost by now—yet the man had the gall to threaten his ancestors’ graves. Truly, Fang He was looking for a beating.
“You—” Fang He was speechless.
“Hurry up, you two!” Guan Qian appeared before Mo Han and Fang He in a flash, pulling them from the mud and urging Mo Han to carry the unconscious Jiang Qiang and Fang He away from the dangerous green shade, while he stayed behind to intercept any lurking Soul-Eater demons.
“My god, does heaven want to kill us?” Fang He wilted as he saw a massive chasm at the edge of the green shade, blocking their path.
Suddenly, an arm grabbed him, lifting him up. The scenery blurred, and just like that, they were across the chasm.
Turning back, Fang He saw Guan Qian already back on the other side.
“Incredible—utterly unbelievable!” Despite having witnessed Guan Qian’s astonishing abilities before, Fang He was astounded to experience this miraculous power firsthand.
In less than eight seconds, Guan Qian had brought Mo Han and Jiang Qiang safely to the other side.
The group breathed a little easier.
“Guan Qian!” Tang Ruyan had spotted them and rushed over. The tremors in the green shade had grown so violent that the chasm had widened, forcing Tang Ruyan to wait at a distance for Guan Qian.
“Tang Ruyan!?” Fang He and Mo Han exclaimed together, surprised and puzzled.
“There’s no time to explain. We need to leave, now!” Guan Qian frowned, hoisting the unconscious Jiang Qiang and moving away from the green shade’s view.
“Fang He, what are you standing there for? Move!” Mo Han shouted at Fang He, who was still dazed.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Fang He replied, his grin stretching to his ears, a sly laugh betraying some mischief.
A hundred meters away.
A thunderous boom echoed across the land. The green shade suddenly contracted, flowing like a raging waterfall, leaving everyone speechless.
In the blink of an eye, the green shade vanished, replaced by sand and stone.
A deafening roar signaled the retreat of the Soul-Eater demon and the disappearance of the green shade underground, while the chasm trembled and slowly closed up.
Boom—
Everything vanished along with the chasm, leaving no trace!
The group shivered as if waking from a dream. The green shade had been the Soul-Eater demon’s lair—an unfathomable revelation bordering on the fantastical.
“Look, what’s that?” Fang He, always sharp-eyed, spotted a golden glow at the center where the green shade had disappeared. Though the sky was heavy with leaden clouds and the sunlight barely filtered through, the golden light shone undiminished.
Everyone turned, anxious and puzzled, but Guan Qian exclaimed, “Gold!”
The words had barely left his mouth when Fang He darted forward like a rabbit, ignoring Mo Han’s shouts about danger. Greed and excitement gleamed in his small eyes, revealing every thought he had.
Fortune favors the bold—Fang He was all in.
“Haha, I’m rich! Rich!” Fang He stripped off his T-shirt, digging sparkling gold chunks from the rubble and bundling them into his shirt. His nimble movements made the others’ faces darken instantly. That laugh, that manner—he looked just like a convict freshly released from prison.
“Damn, that guy’s shameless!” Mo Han muttered.
Guan Qian was speechless, beginning to suspect that after graduation, Fang He’s career would be nothing short of legendary.
Tang Ruyan remained expressionless, staring at the unconscious Jiang Qiang. Her deep, unfathomable eyes betrayed no hint of her thoughts nor her feelings toward her so-called ‘nemesis.’
Thunder rolled, clouds pressed low, and the faint sunlight was completely blocked.
A heavy rain was imminent!
“Damn it, Fang He, hurry up! It’s about to rain—we need to find shelter!” Mo Han called out.
“Wait for me! Wait for me! Slow down, these gold bars are so heavy!” Fang He gasped, running after them, his mouth full of complaints, but refusing to drop a single piece, bundling them tighter instead.
The group began searching for shelter from the rain, but everywhere they looked was barren and rocky, leaving them bewildered.
