Chapter 111: Doomsday 26
Chapter 14
When Le Yixian saw Ke Yuandao, she immediately rushed at him. He didn’t step back but reached out to catch her. “Why are you here again?” he asked.
Hadn’t they just parted moments ago?
“I’ve missed you so much,” Le Yixian murmured, burying her head in his embrace.
“I missed you too,” Ke Yuandao said, pleased by her words, patting her shoulder.
“Ke Yuandao,” Le Yixian lifted her head and called his name, her expression serious. “I have something very important to tell you. You have to believe me.”
Ke Yuandao rarely saw such earnestness in a woman’s eyes and nodded. “Mm, whatever you say, I’ll believe you.”
“No, you can’t just believe blindly,” Le Yixian corrected him. “The story I’m about to tell is long.”
Xia Meimei, a recent graduate from the Department of Biology, was assigned by General Xia to work as a research assistant under a renowned domestic biologist. Due to Xia Meimei’s exceptional talent, the esteemed elder highly valued her and personally guided her doctoral thesis.
However, before Xia Meimei could finish her thesis, the elder received a secret national assignment. As his trusted assistant, Xia Meimei was brought along to a heavily guarded white research facility deep in the forest, where no one inside was allowed to contact the outside world.
The reason was chilling: the research facility housed a dire threat to humanity’s future—the zombie virus.
The elder was a key figure in developing the zombie vaccine. Devoted to humanity, he tirelessly researched and experimented day and night. Unexpectedly, before the vaccine could be developed, the apocalypse arrived.
Learning of the end times, the elder accelerated his research. Believing that testing the virus on small animals would yield little progress, he injected the virus into himself to study its transformation effects. Eventually, he managed to create a prototype.
As everyone celebrated their breakthrough, the elder fell ill from the strain and soon passed away. Xia Meimei stayed behind to continue his unfinished work.
She used her own body for experiments as well, and finally succeeded in developing the vaccine. But due to a riot at the facility, the vaccine data was lost.
While searching for the missing data, Ke Yuandao arrived.
Xia Meimei left the facility with Ke Yuandao, fearing the terrifying group would return at any moment.
“So, you’ve been researching this zombie virus all along?” Ke Yuandao asked.
“Yes,” Le Yixian nodded, her expression heavy. “I’ve been dreaming of my mentor these days. I want to return to the facility to look for those data.”
“I’ll go with you,” Ke Yuandao said, frowning but offering his support without further question.
Le Yixian was touched, feeling this man naively believed her. But on second thought, why should she shoulder all the blame for things she hadn’t done? It would be better to push the problem away and just be lovingly close with her own sweetheart.
If the gods of this world believed her, naturally someone else would take the fall.
And that scapegoat arrived quickly, much to Le Yixian’s surprise.
The same night she spoke with Ke Yuandao, Le Yixian was kidnapped in her sleep.
She woke up in an unfamiliar room, her hands tied to a chair.
“Madam, you’re finally awake,” a voice in her mind sighed with relief. It was Gousheng.
From him, she learned she had been drugged and taken to the basement of the Xia family villa.
Why was she kidnapped out of nowhere?
At that moment, the basement door opened.
General Xia and a narrow-eyed old man walked in.
Le Yixian said nothing, staring straight at them.
“Meimei, long time no see,” the narrow-eyed old man greeted first.
Le Yixian thought, I don’t know you.
She silently turned her face away, showing clear resistance to speaking with him.
Seeing this, the narrow-eyed old man rambled on.
It turned out he was the antagonist Ke Yuandao had placed in the research facility. While Xia Meimei’s mentor focused on vaccine research, this man abused his power to conduct cruel and perverse experiments.
No wonder he talked so much—he was the ultimate villain, Le Yixian thought quietly.
“Meimei, where is the zombie vaccine that Elder Liu researched?” After his long speech, the narrow-eyed man asked his true purpose.
“Wasn’t it already destroyed by you?” Le Yixian replied. “Look at how the facility was; do you think anything could have survived? All the data is gone.”
“Meimei, did Elder Liu ever tell you that lying children will die?” the narrow-eyed man’s expression darkened.
“My mentor never said that, and I’m not lying.”
“The facility was destroyed. Why would you stay there?”
“To recover the data. Later, I found the main computer board was broken and couldn’t be salvaged. When I tried to leave, the entire outside was overrun by zombies, so I waited for someone to rescue me.”
“Do you think I would believe that?” The narrow-eyed man didn’t trust her.
“You should believe me. After all, my life is in your hands now. If I upset you, I’d be dead already,” Le Yixian said earnestly. “I’m really afraid of dying.”
“So everything you said you have is fake?” General Xia suddenly spoke.
“Of course. If I had it, I would have shown it by now. I said those things to make you treat me better.”
General Xia and the narrow-eyed man exchanged a glance. “You’ll stay here for now.”
Le Yixian was shocked. “You’re not letting me go? Ke Yuandao arranged to meet me tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry about that. I will handle it,” General Xia said without turning back. “Just stay here for a while.”
Then the basement door was shut from the outside.
“How will you handle this?” Le Yixian frowned.
She tried many ways to untie the ropes but failed. Finally, she yawned and drifted into a dizzy sleep.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Yang Zhengqi thrown on the ground, bound tightly like a package. His face was bloodied, evidence of a fierce fight before capture.
“Hey, what a coincidence,” Le Yixian greeted, looking down at him.
Yang Zhengqi struggled to lift his head. “Le YI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
