Zhang Juzheng stood before the Northern Garrison Surveillance Office, flanked by Deputy Commander Lü Diaoyang. Behind them stood the officials of the Three Judicial Departments.

Present were Left Censor-in-Chief Ge Shouli of the Censorate, Minister of Justice Wang Zhigao, the Left and Right Ministers of the Court of Judicial Review Li Youzi and Luo Fengxiang, along with other court officials. From the emperor’s retinue came the Commandant of the Embroidered Uniform Guard, Zhu Xixiao, and the overseer of the Eastern Depot, Feng Bao. Together, they formed the tribunal for this joint trial of the Three Judicial Departments.

The Ministry of Justice was responsible for criminal law, the Censorate for supervision and investigation, and the Court of Judicial Review for adjudication; all three departments convened here.

To solemnly receive the emperor’s presence, the Embroidered Uniform Guard’s Northern Garrison Surveillance Office underwent an unprecedented thorough cleaning. The windows gleamed, the corners were scrubbed with pig bristle brushes, and sandalwood incense burned, dispelling the usual gloom of the office and brightening the atmosphere.

Emperor Zhu Yijun sat in the rear hall of the office; as the emperor, he occupied the central seat in the front hall. So who would conduct the trial?

The accused, Wang Zhanglong, was brought forth from the dungeon, tightly restrained by two hundred-robe-clad Execution Captains, who escorted him with iron grip. Even upon entering the courtroom, the captains held firm, wary of any slack.

Commandant Zhu Xixiao had but one demand: absolutely no incident was to occur within the Northern Garrison Surveillance Office.

“Bang! Wang Zhanglong, confess immediately! Who ordered you to assassinate at the Palace of Heavenly Purity?” Zhu Xixiao, presiding over the court, struck his tiger’s heart awakening block, projecting an imposing presence as he demanded answers with a sharp voice.

Kneeling, Wang Zhanglong trembled, seemingly startled by the sound of the block, and stammered, “Commander, I merely entered the palace to steal some items, not to assassinate. I beg your honorable investigation.”

“Present the evidence!” Zhu Xixiao commanded loudly.

Two knives—one long, one short—used in the assassination attempt were brought forward. The short one was a dagger intended for the emperor; the long one, a ring-hilted blade that wounded Zhang Hong, was exceptionally sharp.

A bedboard from the emperor’s dragon bed had been replaced; it bore a puncture wound matching the dagger. After the emperor rose, Zhang Hong ordered Zhang Jing and his men to remove the board and swap it with a new one, which was then submitted as evidence to the Three Judicial Departments.

Zhu Xixiao sneered, “You brought weapons into the palace and marched straight to the Palace of Heavenly Purity. When the eunuch Zhang Hong caught you, I was personally present. Where are the stolen goods? You can’t possibly reject all the palace’s treasures! With such ironclad evidence before you, yet you dare toI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
