Chapter 9: Killing with a Borrowed Sword
Yang Zhan looked at the eunuch’s attire and said, "Seventh rank, huh."
"That's right, I’m a seventh-rank inner court eunuch. If you dare lay a hand on me, you’re all doomed—none of you will escape!" the eunuch warned.
"Slap!"
A sharp smack across the face echoed loudly. The eunuch was stunned and disoriented from the blow.
Fourth Brother grinned, "You didn’t hit hard enough. Otherwise, I’d have broken your neck by now!"
Yang Zhan stepped forward, looking at the dazed eunuch. "It’s been three months without the monthly stipend. What’s the meaning of this? A prestigious inner court official, yet you’re behind on payments to us?"
The eunuch realized what was going on, covered his face, and burst into tears.
Damn!
Yang Zhan couldn’t help but snort in disbelief.
What the hell? A big shot like you, crying after just one slap?
But then he reminded himself this wasn’t really a “big shot” in the usual sense.
"Have you brought the monthly stipend or not?" Yang Zhan asked.
The eunuch cast a fearful glance at him. "No."
"No? Then what are you here for? To get your ass handed to you?"
Fearful of another slap, the eunuch fell silent.
Yang Zhan studied the eunuch, realizing he didn’t recognize him.
"Which palace were you from before?"
"Fengyi Palace."
Yang Zhan frowned. Fengyi Palace—that was the Empress’s palace, wasn’t it?
The Empress?
Yang Zhan thought for a moment. That would be the mother of the Third Prince.
He frowned slightly but soon relaxed.
"Go back and obediently bring the monthly stipend and supplies. Tell whoever’s in charge that if they don’t deliver, I’ll come personally to collect!"
"Wh-who are you?" the young eunuch stammered.
"Our Second Master is Yang Zhan!" the Third Prince spoke up. "You’ve got blind dog’s eyes if you dare disrespect our Second Master!"
The little eunuch didn’t answer.
"Let him go. Scram!" Yang Zhan waved his hand.
Relieved, the eunuch dashed off excitedly.
The dozen or so inner guards who had come along, still groaning on the ground, were ignored.
At this moment, the Third Prince whispered, "Second Master, do you think this will blow up?"
"If it does, so much the better. Only when the water is stirred do the big fish surface."
The Third and Fourth Brothers looked at Yang Zhan with admiration.
The Third Prince said sincerely, "Brilliant. When Second Master speaks, it’s like a profound teaching—not something ordinary people can understand!"
Fourth Brother turned to Third Brother. "Did you get that?"
"No, that’s why it’s brilliant!"
Yang Zhan rolled his eyes at the two before walking out.
"Keep a close watch. If those three ladies inside go missing, that’ll be a disaster!"
"Don’t worry, Second Master!"
Passing between the inner guards, Yang Zhan listened to their groans and was briefly transported back to the battlefield—
The neighing of warhorses, the thunderous beat of war drums!
He seemed to hear the shouts and cries of soldiers charging into battle once more.
