Volume One, Chapter 48: Beautiful
A single blade does not make an impeller.
Twenty-four precision-machined blades, resembling twenty-four medals, were carefully mounted onto the disk. Master Li personally supervised every single step, and his apprentices held their breath. This was a sacred assembly. The tightening torque of every bolt was repeatedly verified using a digital torque wrench, with an error margin not exceeding 0.1 Newton-meters.
When the final blade was locked into position, a complete turbo-fan impeller stood revealed before everyone. It resembled a blooming metallic chrysanthemum, each "petal" twisted into a complex curve, shimmering with a uniform cold light.
"Gorgeous." Master Li's apprentice, Xiao Zhang, couldn't help praising, "Master, this is even more stunning than any we've made before."
Master Li said nothing. He merely used his gloved hand to gently stroke the rim of the impeller. It was too perfect—so perfect that it made him uneasy.
"Prepare for the dynamic balance test," he commanded in a deep voice.
The impeller was steadily hoisted into the dynamic balance testing machine. This machine was the pride and joy of the entire workshop: a massive metal cage encased in heavy steel plating and explosion-proof glass.
Du Yuze stood before the console, watching the initial data dance across the screen. "Static unbalance, 1.5 gram-millimeters. Within expectations."
"Hmph, what's static balance worth?" Master Li stood behind him, arms crossed over his chest. "Once it rotates at high speed, any minute weight discrepancy turns into centrifugal force trying to rip it apart. That's the nightmare of dynamic balance."
"Let's begin." Du Yuze did not turn back; he pressed the start button.
The motor engaged, and the impeller began to spin slowly. One hundred RPM, five hundred, one thousand... The machine ran smoothly, accompanied only by a faint hum.
"Accelerate to five thousand RPM," Du Yuze said.
"No!" Master Li immediately intervened. "We need to add counterweights first! Going straight to high speed will stress the bearings to failure!"
"Engineer Li, I want to capture the raw vibration data."
"I can tell what's out of balance just by feel! Xiao Zhang, bring the counterweights and putty!" Master Li completely ignored Du Yuze's suggestion, turning to shout at his apprentice.
Xiao Zhang immediately rushed over with his tool chest. This was their traditional craftsmanship. Using the vibration points measured by the machine, they would use industrial putty and standard counterweights to incrementally add or reduce weight at specific locations on the impeller until the machine's vibration value dropped to the minimum.
"Zone B-3, add 0.5 grams." Master Li pressed his face against the observation window, his palm resting on the casing to feel the microscopic tremor.
Xiao Zhang skillfully opened the maintenance port and firmly pressed a small piece of counterweight putty onto the back of the disk.
Test, shut down, apply putty. Test again, shut down again, micro-adjust.
All morning, the people in the workshop passed the time in this tedious cycle. Sweat beaded on Master Li's forehead. Du Yuze stood to the side the entire time, watching the erratic vibration curves on the screen without a word.
[System Analysis: Random manual counterweighting is introducing new unbalance variables. The vibration model cannot converge.]
In Du Yuze's mind, the system warnings had turned red.
"Dammit!" Master Li slammed his fist against the casing. "Zone C-7 is balanced, and now Zone A-5 is out of spec again! Why is this thing acting like it's alive?"
"Because it is alive," Du Yuze finally spoke up. "Every single blade is close to perfection, and that paradoxically makes the center of gravity of the entire system extremely sensitive. Every piece of putty you press down is disrupting the original mechanical equilibrium and creating a new problem."
"What do you mean? Your blades are fine, so my dynamic balance is the problem?" Master Li spun around, his heavy breathing washing over Du Yuze's face.
"That's not what I mean. I'm saying our methods can no longer keep up with the precision of the parts," Du Yuze replied calmly. "Manual counterweighting achieves gram-level accuracy. But this impeller requires milligram-level precision."
"Milligram-level? Do you think we're compounding medicine?" Xiao Zhang couldn't help interjecting. "Whose hands could possibly be that precise?"
"That's why we can't use hands," Du Yuze said.
"If not hands, what? Words?" Master Li's emotions completely boiled over. "Kid, you made the blades, I'll admit you're good! But right here, in dynamic balance, I am the expert! I've been doing this for thirty years! I've balanced more impellers than I can count! Are you saying it won't work just because you say so?"
"Engineer Li, data doesn't lie," Du Yuze pointed at the screen. "We've worked all morning, and the total vibration value has only dropped by 6%, while the peak values are bouncing back and forth across different zones. This is a textbook case of over-correction."
"I don't care about your damn data! I trust my hands!" Master Li's eyes were bloodshot. "Xiao Zhang, swap the putty for the grinder! Grind away 0.2 grams from the disk position corresponding to Zone A-5 for me!"
Adding weight with putty was reversible, but grinding away weight meant permanent damage.
"Master, this..." Xiao Zhang hesitated.
"Grind!" Master Li roared.
Du Yuze did not try to persuade him further. He simply watched silently as Xiao Zhang took an angle grinder and reached into the precision impeller. The harsh screech of friction echoed out, sending sparks flying in all directions.
[Warning: Microscopic structural surface damage to the disk detected; stress concentration risk increased by 30%.]
Du Yuze's temples throbbed violently.
After a session of near-barbaric grinding, the test was run once more.
"The vibration dropped!" Xiao Zhang shouted excitedly. "Master, Zone A-5 is green!"
A trace of color finally returned to Master Li's face. He cast a defiant glance at Du Yuze, as if saying: *See that? This is experience.*
"Keep going! Target speed: fifteen thousand RPM! We're taking this thing down today!" A middle-aged man in a white shirt, presumably the project director, walked over and patted Master Li on the shoulder. "Old Li, push harder!"
"Don't worry, Director Wang!" Master Li patted his chest in assurance.
Du Yuze wanted to say something, but Director Wang had already turned to him: "Xiao Du, I know you're a theory expert. But for practical operations, we still have to trust the experience of the veterans. Combine theory with practice, right?"
Du Yuze swallowed his words back down.
The order was given, and the test resumed.
The speed needle began to climb.
Five thousand RPM... eight thousand... ten thousand...
The roaring noise of the machine grew louder, transitioning from a low growl to a piercing scream. The entire ground began to vibrate slightly.
The vibration index on the console danced wildly along the boundary between the green and yellow zones.
"Hold steady! Hold steady!" Master Li stared fixedly at the instrument panel, muttering under his breath.
Twelve thousand RPM!
Suddenly, a piercing alarm shrieked through the entire workshop.
On the screen, the vibration index representing Zone A-5 instantly breached the red line, pegging straight to the absolute limit of the measurement scale!
"Stop! Shut it down!" Du Yuze roared.
But it was all too late.
With a deafening explosion, it sounded as though a bomb had detonated inside the testing machine.
The entire dynamic balance machine, weighing dozens of tons, violently shuddered, and spiderweb cracks instantly covered the explosion-proof glass of the observation window. Thick black smoke, mixed with a pungent, burning stench, spewed from the gaps in the machine.
Everyone was stunned frozen by this sudden turn of events.
Dead silence filled the workshop.
A few seconds later, Master Li charged forward like a madman, disregarding the scorching hot casing as he tried to yank open the maintenance door. "My impeller! My impeller!"
The door was jammed shut.
Du Yuze immediately pressed the emergency fire suppression button, and pungent dry chemical extinguishing powder sprayed into the chamber.
When the smoke cleared and the robotic arm laboriously forced open the twisted, deformed hatch, everyone gasped in horror.
The scene inside resembled hell.
That impeller, which had once looked like a work of art, was now a pile of twisted scrap metal. The disk was torn open with a massive gap, and the twenty-four blades were broken or bent; not a single one remained intact.
One of the blades was nowhere to be found. Only a horrifying gouge, several centimeters deep on the inner wall of the containment chamber, bore witness to its final, destructive trajectory.
The entire test rig was completely totaled.
"It's over..." Director Wang's face turned pale as he muttered to himself. "This testing machine was imported... The losses..."
Master Li stood there in a daze, staring at the pile of scrap metal as if all his life force had been drained away. His hands, which had once been capable of sensing micron-level errors, shook uncontrollably.
"Master..." Xiao Zhang tried to support him, only to be shoved away violently.
"It was me..." Master Li's voice was as hoarse as a broken gong. "It was my fault... I... destroyed it..."
His lifetime of pride, the skills and experience he relied upon for survival, had been blown to smithereens in that single deafening blast.
Director Wang's complexion shifted from pale to ashen, and he abruptly whirled around to face Du Yuze. "Du Yuze! You designed the blades, and you wrote the program! Tell me! What is the meaning of this?!"
In an instant, everyone's gaze converged on Du Yuze. Some eyes held doubt, others scrutiny, and a few carried schadenfreude.
Du Yuze looked past them all, focusing solely on Master Li's desolate state. He knew that the blow dealt to this veteran craftsman at this moment was devastating.
He walked over to the pile of wreckage, crouched down, and picked up a broken blade. The fracture was clean, bearing the shell-like textures characteristic of metal fatigue failure.
[Fracture Analysis: High-frequency vibration induced the propagation of micro-cracks in the material, ultimately leading to brittle fracture. The source of the initial crack is located at the junction where the blade root meets the disk.]
"It is not your fault, Engineer Li," Du Yuze stood up, his voice not loud, but exceptionally clear. "Nor is it a problem with the blade machining."
He turned to Director Wang, holding up the fractured blade.
"This is a systemic failure. Our machining precision has surpassed our assembly technology, our inspection methods, and even our understanding of the material itself."
"What are you trying to say?" Director Wang frowned.
"I mean that we used chip-manufacturing precision to create a component, yet we are still using tractor-repair methods to assemble and test it." Du Yuze's words were harsh, but they were the truth. "Manual grinding and counterweighting created uneven stress points on the impeller's surface. Under ultra-high-speed rotation, these stress points, combined with invisible micro-defects within the material, triggered resonance. It was the final straw that broke the camel's back."
He paused, sweeping his gaze across the room.
"The responsibility for this accident does not lie with any single individual, but with the mindset of all of us. We must acknowledge that a veteran master's tactile feel and experience have reached their limits in certain domains."
Master Li abruptly raised his head, his bloodshot eyes devoid of anger, holding only a sea of gray ash.
"Director Wang," Du Yuze said solemnly, "I propose that we immediately abolish all manual dynamic balance operations. The project team must apply for funding at once to introduce laser cladding dynamic balance technology. It can achieve milligram-level precision counterweights through additive repair without damaging the substrate."
"Furthermore," he emphasized, "I demand that the next batch of all titanium alloy raw materials, as well as every core load-bearing component, undergo the highest-grade phased-array ultrasonic non-destructive testing. We must root out every single 'landmine' hidden inside the material while it is still just raw stock."
The entire workshop remained pin-drop silent.
Director Wang looked at Du Yuze, then glanced at the bewildered Master Li, and finally cast his gaze back onto the totaled testing machine.
After a long pause, he finally spoke with great difficulty: "Your proposal... what confidence level do you have?"
"This isn't a matter of confidence." Du Yuze placed the broken blade back onto the console. "This is the only correct path forward for us."
Master Li stared at the blade, then looked at Du Yuze. He opened his mouth, his throat sounding as though it had been scoured by sandpaper, yet not a single word came out. He simply turned away in silence, dragging his heavy footsteps away from the place that had witnessed both his greatest glory and his most profound humiliation.
