Chapter Thirteen: That Old Deng, He Actually Used Me!
Three hours later, the doors to the emergency treatment room opened, and Wu Bin was wheeled out.
Xu Wenyao, Yang Kang, and the others immediately crowded around him.
“How is he, Dean Li?” Xu Wenyao asked nervously.
Dean Li Guotai smiled.
“The surgery was a complete success. All the toxins have been removed from Wu Bin’s body. From here on, he just needs to rest and recuperate for a while.”
At those words, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Then they all turned to look at Wu Bin with strange expressions.
That was highly poisonous pokeweed. How had this kid survived after soaking it in water and drinking it?
It made no sense. Absolutely none!
The viewers in the livestream were equally stunned.
“Holy crap, I thought this guy was done for. I can’t believe he’s actually fine!”
“Buddy, he was in emergency treatment for three whole hours. You call that fine?”
“This guy’s a real piece of work. He’s in the hospital every other day, and every time it’s for some serious condition. I honestly wonder what kind of sin he committed in his past life.”
“The King of Hell’s Palace: The other side has withdrawn a college student.”
“This kid may be fragile, but his ancestors must have powerful connections in the underworld. He probably went through all ten Kings of Hell.”
“Ancestor: He’s the only college student in our family for eighteen generations!”
“Counselor: Eat up, you little disaster. Who could possibly have better luck than you?”
Reading the comments in the livestream, He Bingbing couldn’t help laughing.
Wu Bin’s poisoning had been an unfortunate accident, so why did she feel like laughing?
Fortunately, He Bingbing hadn’t forgotten her duties.
The moment Wu Bin was pushed into the hospital room, she stepped forward to interview him.
“Wu Bin, how are you feeling now?”
Wu Bin smiled at the camera.
“I feel great. I slept really well.”
???
Everyone stared at him in bewilderment.
Did he not realize that he had just taken a trip to the gates of death? Why was he talking as if he had merely taken a nap?
He Bingbing reminded him, “Wu Bin, that thing you dug up in the weeds earlier wasn’t ginseng. It was pokeweed—a deadly poisonous plant.”
Wu Bin gave an indifferent “Oh,” without the slightest awareness of how serious the situation had been.
“Really? So it wasn’t ginseng after all. Still, that stuff was pretty good for sleep. I haven’t slept that well in ages.”
He Bingbing was rendered speechless once again.
How was she supposed to continue the interview?
This kid simply refused to follow the script!
Originally, He Bingbing had wanted to guide Wu Bin into recognizing the seriousness of the situation, so that he might say something like, “I really regret it.”
Then she could give the viewers a proper lesson, reminding them not to put every strange thing they saw into their mouths.
But Wu Bin not only showed no remorse whatsoever—he even claimed that pokeweed was good for sleep.
“Miss Bingbing, what’s wrong? Does your stomach hurt?”
He Bingbing waved her hand.
“No. I just thought of something unpleasant.”
“Wu Bin, you should lie down and get some rest. The doctor said you need to recuperate.”
“Sure thing.”
Wu Bin obediently lay down on the bed and closed his eyes, looking as though he had fallen asleep.
In truth, however, he was extremely excited.
He had never imagined that the poisoning mission would be completed so easily.
He had been mentally prepared for unbearable agony.
Instead, he had merely felt a little drowsy. He lay down, opened his eyes—and the mission was complete?
No wonder emperors in ancient times called poisoned wine a “gift of death.”
A method that sent someone off so quickly really was far less painful than other ways of dying.
“Wu Bin, are you resting? Would you like something to eat? I can order takeout for you.”
Wu Bin opened his eyes and discovered that Xu Wenyao and Yang Kang were already standing beside his bed.
The steel-built Yang Kang’s eyes were swollen from crying, and he looked noticeably haggard.
Xu Wenyao, who had once been so vigorous and spirited, now had white hair at his temples and looked several years older.
Wu Bin still felt somewhat guilty.
“I’m sorry, Principal. I’ve caused trouble again this time…”
Xu Wenyao immediately waved his hand, cutting him off.
“Wu Bin, what are you talking about? You have nothing to apologize to us for. If anything, we’re the ones who owe you an apology!”
Wu Bin stared at him in confusion.
“Huh?”
Xu Wenyao beckoned, and Yang Kang promptly handed him a thick envelope and a certificate.
In front of the camera, Xu Wenyao placed both the envelope and the certificate into Wu Bin’s hands.
“Wu Bin, if it weren’t for you, we would never have realized that such a serious lapse in school management existed!”
“The school has repeatedly prohibited students from planting random herbs and other plants in the grass, but many students still paid no attention and treated the matter casually.”
“After you were poisoned, I immediately mobilized the entire faculty and staff to conduct emergency safety education for all the students.”
“Wu Bin, the publicity campaign has been remarkably effective!”
Wu Bin: …
Fine, fine. So this was how they were going to play it?
So after eating pokeweed just once, he had suddenly become the school’s model negative example?
What a mess.
Wu Bin lowered his head and glanced at the certificate. Written across it were eight large words:
“Fearless in Adversity, Testing Poison with His Own Life!”
Even someone as thick-skinned as Wu Bin felt his face grow hot.
How embarrassing!
He had simply been poisoned by accident because he couldn’t keep his hands to himself, yet after Xu Wenyao’s spin, he had somehow become a person who had made a contribution to the school.
What a ridiculous turn of events.
“Principal, I don’t deserve this award…”
“Don’t deserve it? Where exactly are you undeserving?”
Xu Wenyao spoke with righteous conviction.
“If you hadn’t risked your life to warn all the students, who knows when the unhealthy atmosphere on our campus would have been eliminated!”
“Wu Bin, don’t worry about anything during this period. Just stay in the hospital and recover properly. The school will cover all your expenses!”
That was a practical promise.
With Xu Wenyao’s assurance, Wu Bin felt relieved.
It looked like he had managed to save another fortune in medical bills this time.
Wu Bin thought that after presenting the award, Xu Wenyao would leave.
Who could have guessed that Xu Wenyao’s eyes would suddenly redden, and tears would begin streaming down his face?
The unexpected display left everyone dumbfounded.
What was Xu Wenyao trying to pull now?
Xu Wenyao gripped Wu Bin’s hand tightly and spoke to the camera with deep emotion.
“Perhaps many of you don’t know this, but Wu Bin is an orphan. Through sheer hard work and determination, he managed to study his way out of an orphanage and into university.”
“I didn’t know about this before. The people in the archives department only told me this morning.”
“Little Wu, you can rest assured. From now on, Agricultural University is your home, and I’ll be your elder!”
Wu Bin fell silent.
This old bastard was even more shameless than he had imagined!
He hadn’t even been lying in the hospital for a full day, and Xu Wenyao had already started using him as promotional material.
As the saying went, the older the ginger, the spicier it was!
No, he had to fight for some benefits. He couldn’t let Xu Wenyao exploit him for nothing!
Wu Bin was considering his countermeasures, but to He Bingbing and the others, he appeared to be sinking into sorrow.
He Bingbing’s nose tingled. Covering her mouth, she began to sob.
What a pitiful child!
Not only was he frail and frequently ill—he was an orphan as well!
Meanwhile, the livestream’s comment feed exploded in an instant!
