Chapter Twenty-Two: Why do you seem a little disappointed?
"Huh?" Director Liu was dumbfounded.
What was going on here?
No, you kid, acting so agitated makes it look like I did this on purpose. But I really didn't!
Li Guotai patted Director Liu on the shoulder.
"Not bad, Little Liu. I didn't realize you had such skills. If our hospital has any patients in need of plastic surgery in the future, I'll leave them to you."
"Don't worry, you won't be putting in the effort for nothing. The hospital will provide you with a subsidy when the time comes."
Director Liu stood there, dazed. Had he stumbled into an extra source of income by sheer coincidence?
Li Guotai turned his gaze toward Wu Bin.
"Student Wu Bin, how do you feel about your vision now?"
Wu Bin was full of vigor. "I think my eyes are excellent. Director Liu's medical skills are truly superb."
Director Liu had already retreated into his own shell; he didn't want to talk anymore. If you want to call it superb, then it's superb—at least being a skilled doctor isn't a bad thing.
"In that case, let's run a test to verify it."
A sweet-looking nurse walked in carrying a vision chart and posted it at a distance of three meters.
Li Guotai held a pointer, ready to begin, but Wu Bin spoke up: "President, this distance is too close. There's no point in testing it here."
"Oh?" Li Guotai became interested. "Then what distance do you think is appropriate?"
Wu Bin didn't speak; he simply started walking away.
Five meters? Li Guotai nodded with satisfaction. It seemed the surgical recovery had indeed been effective.
Ten meters? Everyone's expression changed. Was this kid trying to stir up trouble?
When Wu Bin stopped at the fifteen-meter mark, Li Guotai was certain he was putting on a show. Being able to see clearly at fifteen meters was normal, but testing vision at such a distance was ridiculous.
"Are you sure you want to stand there and start the test?"
Wu Bin nodded. "Yes, President. Let's begin."
To save face for Wu Bin, Li Guotai used the pointer to indicate the first three rows. Wu Bin took one look and froze. Seeing that Wu Bin didn't say anything, Li Guotai's heart sank.
"You can't even see the first three rows clearly?"
Wu Bin said helplessly, "It's not that I can't see them clearly, President. It's that I see them too clearly. Could you point a bit lower?"
Li Guotai had no choice but to move the wooden stick down a bit. Wu Bin felt a headache coming on.
"Why don't you just point at the very last row?"
Once Wu Bin said this, everyone found it hard to believe. He Bingbing and Xu Wenyao even stepped up to stand beside Wu Bin. From where they were standing, the last row looked like a tiny black dot; how could it be possible to tell which direction the symbols were pointing?
Xu Wenyao whispered in Wu Bin's ear, "Student Wu Bin, I know you're excited about regaining your sight, but haste makes waste. Why don't we take it slow?"
Wu Bin was speechless. If he weren't afraid of scaring them, he would have wanted to stand thirty meters away for the test.
"Don't worry, President Xu. I know what I'm doing."
Since Wu Bin insisted, Xu Wenyao had no choice but to shut up.
Li Guotai sighed inwardly. It seemed that no matter how good a child was, they couldn't resist the temptation of traffic and hype. Wu Bin was so young, and he had already learned how to put on a show; what a pity.
Thinking this, Li Guotai pointed randomly at one of the symbols in the last row.
Wu Bin gestured to the right, matching the symbol.
Li Guotai tried to comfort him, "It's alright, Wu Bin. It's normal not to be able to see clearly at such a distance. Let's move a bit closer."
Just as Li Guotai finished speaking, the nurse standing to the side reminded him, "President, Student Wu Bin's direction was correct."
"Huh?" Li Guotai was stunned, then deeply shocked. "Correct? Are you sure?"
The nurse nodded. "It is correct. I've been watching closely."
Hiss!
Li Guotai's expression changed instantly, and the other ophthalmologists began pulling out their phones to record. They had thought this was just a simple vision test, but it now appeared to be valuable medical research material!
Suppressing his excitement, Li Guotai pointed at another symbol. Wu Bin reacted—still correct!
They tested this three times in a row, and Wu Bin got them all right!
The group of doctors was stunned, and they began to argue, their faces turning red and necks thickening.
"Impossible! A normal person cannot have such vision! Some kind of medicine must be having a crucial reaction in his body!"
"How could it be drug-related? Did you not learn middle school physics? This must be a structural change, which led to the change in vision!"
"Stop arguing! In my opinion, Wu Bin's own potential has been unleashed, which is why his vision has had such a massive leap!"
Ignoring the arguing doctors, Li Guotai remained silent for a moment before asking, "Wu Bin, is this fifteen-meter distance a bit too close for you? How far do you think you could stand to take the test?"
As soon as Li Guotai asked this, the arguing doctors fell silent, all staring intently at Wu Bin.
That was right—fifteen meters might not be Wu Bin's limit!
Wu Bin understood the principle of not being too high-profile. He rubbed his nose and said somewhat awkwardly, "President, I feel like if I step back any further, I won't be able to see clearly."
"Really?" Li Guotai looked at him suspiciously. Before, he thought Wu Bin was just being dramatic, but now he felt that Wu Bin was hiding something; the kid probably wasn't telling the truth.
Wu Bin nodded solemnly. "Really, President. I am already very satisfied that my vision has recovered to this level. I want to thank Director Liu; he is truly a miracle worker, a divine physician of our time!"
Hearing this, Director Liu didn't feel honored at all—instead, he felt like Wu Bin was mocking him.
Damn it, you call this a recovery? This is transcendence! Before your retina detached, it was already impressive if you could see the last row of small print from five meters away. What are you putting on an act for!
Seeing that Wu Bin wouldn't tell the truth, Li Guotai had no better options, so he let it be, intending to go back and study Wu Bin's medical records thoroughly.
"Alright, since your vision has recovered, you can go back to school. I'll handle your discharge paperwork."
Wu Bin nodded. "Thank you, President Li."
After the doctors left, Wu Bin noticed that Xu Wenyao was still standing nearby.
"President Xu, is there anything else?"
Xu Wenyao replied with a beaming smile, "Since you're being discharged, and I'm heading back to school anyway, you can ride with me."
The corner of Wu Bin's mouth twitched. This Xu Wenyao was addicted to chasing traffic!
"Alright, President. Let me go pack my things."
Wu Bin returned to his room to gather his belongings. After being discharged, he got into Xu Wenyao's car to head back to school. The journey was calm, and they didn't encounter any accidents.
When the car stopped at the gate of the male dormitory, Xu Wenyao's expression was one of disappointment.
Wu Bin's mouth twitched again. This old man was actually hoping for him to get into another collision! No wonder the driver was driving so wildly; several times, Wu Bin felt the driver was dancing on the edge of criminal behavior. So, it hadn't been his imagination!
"Alright, we're here. Get out."
Wu Bin stepped out and thanked Xu Wenyao. "Thank you, President. I'm going up now."
As soon as Wu Bin turned around, he found the surrounding students looking at him with eyes full of admiration!
