Chapter 14: She Bowed Her Head in Admission of Guilt
Zhao Wenqian thought she could remain indifferent and uninvolved, but the truth was right before her eyes—how could she bear it? She couldn’t hold back for even a moment.
So, without hesitation, she voiced the doubts buried deep in her heart.
Xie Yanli was momentarily stunned. His warm fingertips gently brushed the wound at the corner of his mouth, and a sudden, faint smile flickered in his eyes—though its meaning remained unclear.
“I accidentally bit my lip. It’s nothing serious,” he explained calmly, his expression unreadable.
Zhao Wenqian’s face shifted slightly, her fingers tightening involuntarily.
She lacked the courage to probe further and instead scolded him softly, “Do you know how much that hurts me? You’re just too careless!”
Lowering his eyes, Xie Yanli’s voice was low and hoarse. “I didn’t know before, but now I do.”
As he spoke, he took a step back, deliberately putting some distance between them.
“Go home quickly. It’s already very late.”
Zhao Wenqian stood quietly, motionless.
She hesitated.
A woman’s strong intuition told her that this man before her had changed—he was no longer the same as before.
Her heart racing, she discarded her usual restraint and decided to take the initiative. “Yanli, I don’t want to go home tonight.”
“No.”
Xie Yanli refused coldly, without a moment’s thought.
---
Zhao Wenqian’s heart skipped a beat, clearly unprepared for his refusal. Her delicate face flushed red, then paled, then reddened once more.
The word “Why” hovered tremblingly on her lips, but she swallowed it down with effort.
“Then I’ll go back. Be careful on your way!”
“Mm.”
...
*
Wei Yang couldn’t recall how long she had slept, but when she awoke, the scenery outside the car window was familiar.
Suddenly, a sharp pang gripped her heart, and she instinctively straightened her back.
She was instantly fully alert.
Wei Yang couldn’t help but bring a hand to her forehead, wishing she could bury her head like a quail. How could she have fallen asleep in Shen Cenzi’s car?
“Awake?”
The cold, yet alluring voice of the man whispered in her ear.
Wei Yang’s cheeks flushed involuntarily as she lowered her head in apology. “I’m sorry, President Shen. I didn’t mean to fall asleep in your car.”
Leaning lazily against the seat, Shen Cenzi raised an eyebrow and asked, “Do you know how long you slept?”
Wei Yang bowed her head even lower, utterly ashamed. How could she have fallen asleep so deeply?
---
“President Shen, I truly apologize!”
“Is that all you have to say?” Shen Cenzi frowned, clearly dissatisfied. “Looks like I need to reconsider whether you’re suitable for this position.”
Wei Yang was stunned for a moment, feeling as if the sky had fallen.
She struggled to suppress her unease, locking eyes with the man beside her, and bit her lip to ask, “President Shen, do you mean you don’t want to hire me?”
Shen Cenzi let out a cold snort, glancing at her with a chill. “What do you think?”
Surprise flickered in Wei Yang’s eyes, unsure of what he meant, yet she still lowered her head. “President Shen, I won’t let it happen again. Please give me another chance.”
The panic and uncertainty in her eyes did not escape his notice.
Raising an eyebrow, Shen Cenzi looked at Wei Yang like a hunter appraising prey within easy reach.
“Get out of the car.”
“President Shen, I—”
Before Wei Yang could finish, Shen Cenzi, clearly impatient, spoke with a harsh, mocking tone: “Still not getting out? Are you trying to seduce me?”
Wei Yang was stunned; the vivid color drained instantly from her delicate face.
Her mind drifted back to that lively night many years ago, when, in front of everyone, she had falsely accused him of trying to seduce her.
