Chapter 23: Do You Really Think You Have a Choice?

Wei Yang stood frozen for a long moment, her expression turning grim in an instant.
The scene of Zhao Wenqian throwing coffee at her earlier that day rose unbidden in her mind. She squeezed her eyes shut, then pretended to remain composed. “Mr. Xie, why have you called me?”
Xie Yanli ignored her. In a low voice laced with mockery, he said, “Or I can come upstairs and find you. You have two choices, Wei Yang. Don’t say I never gave you a chance.”
Perhaps because Zhao Wenqian had humiliated her earlier that day, Wei Yang now felt both aggrieved and consumed by anger.
She clenched her teeth and demanded coldly, “Xie Yanli! What exactly do you want? We’re already over.”
A low, almost amused scoff came through the phone. “You’re not coming down? Then I’ll come up. Don’t regret it.”
Her heart jolted. The fingers gripping her phone tightened unconsciously. “Mr. Xie, I’m coming down now.”
After spending three years at Xie Yanli’s side, she knew his temper all too well. The more she defied him, the more amused he became. But if she gave in to him at every turn, he would find it pointless.
“Don’t keep me waiting too long. You know I’m not a patient man.”
“I’ll be right there.”
…
After ending the call, Wei Yang did not dare delay for even a minute. She changed her shoes at the door and hurried toward the elevator.
From a distance, she spotted a tall figure standing beneath a streetlamp.
He leaned lazily against the car door, a lit cigarette held between his fingers.

Wisps of bluish-gray smoke curled upward, blurring his handsome, wickedly alluring features and those terrifying black eyes that seemed as deep as an abyss.
Wei Yang drew a deep breath and unconsciously tightened her fingers before striding toward the figure.
She stopped when she was half a meter away.
“Mr. Xie!”
She lowered her gaze, appearing obedient and submissive.
The next moment, Wei Yang felt her slender waist tighten. A powerful arm locked her firmly against a hot, solid chest.
Her breath caught, and her face instantly darkened.
A cry of surprise reached her lips, but she swallowed it back and said coldly, “Mr. Xie, if you don’t want Miss Zhao to know I exist, you’d better let go.”
The man arched a brow, his smile wicked. Several long, elegant fingers closed tightly around her chin. “Wei Yang, are you threatening me?”
Pain radiated from her chin, making her wince as her brows drew tightly together.
Wei Yang looked up at him. Her raven-dark lashes trembled lightly as she forced out, “Miss Zhao came to see me at noon.”
“Mr. Xie, you don’t want Miss Zhao to know about our relationship, and I don’t want anyone to know about that part of my past either.”
It was the greatest humiliation of her life.

But without those years, she truly did not know whether she could have endured.
Hearing her words, Xie Yanli raised a brow, his voice dripping with derision. “What? Did I embarrass you?”
Wei Yang frowned and helplessly pursed her lips. “No.”
“Then what is it?”
Wei Yang was momentarily speechless and fell silent.
The more one said, the more mistakes one made. Better to say nothing at all.
Seeing that she remained silent, Xie Yanli curved his lips into a knowing smile. “Get in the car!”
“No! I’m not going!”
No matter where Xie Yanli intended to take her, she could not go.
Now that she had resolved to sever ties, she had to do it cleanly. She wanted to begin a new life, not remain entangled with the past.
Xie Yanli suddenly laughed. He casually toyed with the loose strands of hair beside her ear and spoke with careless ease. “Guess whether that’s up to you.”
