Chapter 28: My Eyes Are Not Yet Dim with Age

"I'm afraid I can't help you."

Su Qing spread her hands, remaining firm. "If I keep her here, she’ll skin me alive once she wakes up."

Xie Yuhuai blinked, then produced a card and handed it to her. "I will take responsibility for all consequences."

Su Qing frowned, clearly still hesitant. But Xie Yuhuai didn't give her time to waver, his tone turning wretched. "You know as well as I do that I was dumped for no reason, and now I’m branded a scumbag, yet I’ve done nothing wrong."

"Su Qing, you are her best friend. You should know how much I love her. Even if I am to die, I deserve to die knowing the truth. If there is truly a misunderstanding between us, and we reconcile, you will be the ultimate matchmaker. I heard you are currently managing a project; the president of that company is a friend of mine."

"I promise, this has nothing to do with you. I am the one who kept her here; you had no choice."

Watching the plea in Xie Yuhuai’s eyes, Su Qing finally softened. "Fine, suit yourself. But Xie Yuhuai, let me tell you this: if you dare hurt Yu Zi, I swear I will be your sworn enemy. I’ll spend every day whispering bad things about you in her ear."

That would be disastrous, Xie Yuhuai thought to himself, but he kept it to himself and simply nodded.

"Xie Yuhuai, have you truly never done anything to wrong Yu Zi?"

After a moment of hesitation, Su Qing finally asked.

At these words, Xie Yuhuai shook his head without the slightest hesitation. "Su Qing, I swear, I truly haven’t. If I had, may I be struck by lightning and meet a miserable end."

Xie Yuhuai paused, then suddenly stood up, his eyes filled with a frantic, expectant light. "Do you know something? Did Yu Zi tell you something?"

Su Qing didn't answer directly. "This is between you and Yu Zi. I know nothing. If you want the truth, ask her yourself."

With that, Su Qing turned and walked away. Yu Zi had confided in her about the past out of trust. Even if she chose to believe Xie Yuhuai, she could not speak of it. Aside from everything else, she knew Xie Yuhuai was incapable of hurting Yu Zi.

Perhaps he was right; maybe this was their chance. It wouldn't be so bad if it were truly just a misunderstanding. She genuinely felt that it was highly probable that there had been a misunderstanding all along. Even a fool could see the depth of Xie Yuhuai’s feelings for Yu Zi.

Xie Yuhuai watched Su Qing’s departing back, lost in thought, now more certain than ever that she knew something.

"Senior, let me stay and wait for her to wake up with you."

Xu Nuo waited until Su Qing had left before approaching.

"No need. You should leave." Xie Yuhuai said coldly, his gaze towards Xu Nuo chilling to the bone.

For some reason, for a fleeting moment, Xu Nuo felt as if she had fallen into an ice cellar. She bit her lower lip, clearly sensing Xie Yuhuai’s intense dislike. "Senior, what... what is wrong with you?"

Xie Yuhuai suddenly looked up, his eyes fixed on her like an eagle eyeing its prey, a sight that made her heart race with dread.

"Xu Nuo, whatever you’ve done—do you really think I don’t know?"

Hearing this, Xu Nuo’s heart skipped a beat, yet she managed to force a smile. "Se-Senior, what are you talking about? I don't understand."

Xie Yuhuai stood up and let out a cold laugh. "Heh, did you really think I was blind and didn't see the little stunt you pulled on Yu Zi just now?"
