After finishing his frantic questioning, Qin Mu felt so guilty and shaken that his whole body seemed to go limp.

But the man who had brought the news answered solemnly, “President Qin, that little girl’s heart was found at the hospital.”

“What? Say that again.” Qin Mu’s eyes widened in disbelief. He seized the man by the collar, looking like a wild beast.

The man shrank his neck in fear. “Apparently, all of the girl’s other useful organs were taken away. Only her heart was in poor condition, so it was discarded.”

Qin Mu was stunned.

He released the man and stared at him in anguish. “Are you sure?”

The man nodded. “The police haven’t issued an official statement, but that’s what everyone is saying.”

After hearing the news for certain, Qin Mu could barely walk without swaying. He waved his hand, and soon the lounge was left with only him inside.

At that moment, he sat on a stool, wanting nothing more than a moment of silence. He needed to sort out exactly how much Youyou’s disappearance had to do with him.

At the doorway, Jiang Xue heard the news and curled her lips into a smile. Looking delighted, she turned and entered the hospital room where little Qin Jinchen was staying.

The child had just been transferred to a regular ward after his wound was stitched. Jiang Xue spoke coldly.

“Stop thinking about that little miss. She will never appear before you again.

“Recover properly and go back to school. Let me tell you this: I am your biological mother. If you call that woman Jiang Li ‘Mom’ again when you see her, I won’t let you off!”

Hearing this, the child stared at her with tear-filled eyes, holding back his sobs in misery. He did not dare cry or speak.

“I’m talking to you. Are you deaf? Do you really want to be beaten again?”

Jiang Xue clenched her fist and waved it in front of Qin Jinchen’s face. Terrified, the child hurriedly nodded, then shook his head.

Then, with a trembling sob, he asked, “What do you mean, she’ll never appear again?”

Seeing him cry, Jiang Xue smiled instead. “You don’t even understand that? Are you stupid? It means that little girl is dead. Your little miss is dead. Do you understand now?”

“Waaah!”

The child suddenly burst into loud sobs, drawing Qin Mu over.

“Jinchen, what happened? What’s going on? Your wound has already reopened a second time. You can’t exert yourself anymore. Behave yourself, do you hear me?”

Qin Mu’s reprimand made Jiang Xue join in. “Did you hear your father? Even he isn’t taking your side this time. Don’t cry, and don’t get worked up!

“I haven’t done anything to you, so don’t go saying things carelessly!”

As she spoke, Jiang Xue placed a hand on the child’s shoulder, but the pain between his fingernails was unbearable.

“Waaah… Dad, please send me to an orphanage. I’m really sad.

“She said my little miss will never appear before me again. She said my little miss is dead.

“I don’t want to stay here anymore. Please call my little miss’s mother. I want her to be my mother. Is that okay?”

“Qin Jinchen!” Hearing her son say this again, Jiang Xue flew into a rage and shook him violently.

“That’s enough!”

Qin Mu’s voice turned icy. “If the child doesn’t want to acknowledge you, shouldn’t you examine your own responsibility?

“If you touch him like that again, you won’t be allowed to see him anymore. Besides, we aren’t married yet. Jiang Xue, I think we shouldn’t get married at all. Even your own biological son refuses to acknowledge you. Perhaps you should think about why.”

Qin Mu’s words instantly threw Jiang Xue into a panic.

“No, Brother Qin Mu. I just love Jinchen too much. Hearing him say those things made me angry. That’s all!”

“Does being angry give you the right to treat your own son so roughly? I don’t see the slightest trace of maternal love in you. I’m seriously beginning to doubt whether you’re Jinchen’s biological mother.”

Qin Mu’s words frightened Jiang Xue into retreating several steps. Then she looked apologetically at the child, who was sobbing uncontrollably.

“Chenchen, Mommy was wrong. I didn’t mean to do that. I was just too angry. Don’t blame me, all right? Mommy will change. Tell me what I did wrong, all right?”

Terrified, Chenchen threw himself into Qin Mu’s arms and shook his head repeatedly.

“I want to go to an orphanage. If my little miss’s mother sees me, she’ll be sad. I want to go to an orphanage!”

Qin Mu’s eyes reddened. “Jinchen, be good. Daddy promises that wherever we go from now on, I’ll take you with me. I also promise to take you to school and pick you up myself. After school, I’ll accompany you in whatever you want to do.

“And I promise that Jiang Xue won’t come near you anymore. We won’t go to an orphanage, all right?”

Before Qin Jinchen could answer, Jiang Xue glared at them furiously.

“No! I don’t agree! You can’t stop a biological mother from visiting her son. I’m only being cautious. I don’t want Jinchen growing close to Jiang Li. Am I wrong?

“He’s my son! He’s my son! No one can take him away from me!”

The little boy began to cry even harder. Seeing his son in tears, Qin Mu felt his heart ache as well.

He turned on Jiang Xue in a fury.

“Someone, escort Jiang Xue out! From now on, she is not to see the young master without my permission.”

As soon as Qin Mu finished speaking, two men in suits entered from the doorway and carried Jiang Xue outside.

Jiang Xue was nearly out of her mind with rage. Yet after being thrown into the corridor, she unexpectedly saw Jiang Li being rushed into the emergency room.

“Hmph. Heaven never bars every path. Jiang Li, you want to steal my son and my husband from me? I absolutely won’t allow it!”

With a calculating look in her eyes, Jiang Xue turned and entered a nurses’ lounge.

She slipped into a nurse’s uniform hanging on the wall without anyone noticing, then put on a mask.

Since you want to steal everything from me, Jiang Li, then I’m sorry—but I will destroy every bit of what you have, piece by piece.

Meanwhile, Jiang Li lay in a regular hospital room, staring blankly at the ceiling.

She could not bring herself to believe that Youyou was gone.

Xie Yun came over, wiping away her tears.

“Xiao Li, I sent Assistant Lin back first. Once your IV is finished, let’s return to the Jiang residence together.

“As for Youyou…” She choked back a sob. “Mom wants you to know that I’m heartbroken too, but life has to go on.

“You’re carrying the burden of the Jiang family conglomerate now. Your biological father’s plane crash still needs to be investigated, and you’re the one who has to do it.

“So please pull yourself together, all right?”

Jiang Li said nothing. Tears slipped silently down her face.

Xie Yun continued earnestly, “Xiao Li, listen to Mom. I truly want you to be well. We’ll have the police continue searching for Youyou. Surely they will…”

She could not finish. Even she could not believe that someone who had lost her heart could possibly still have any hope of surviving.

“Mom, don’t say anything more. We’ll go home after the IV is finished. From now on, I’ll work hard. I’ll…”

Jiang Li could barely speak through her sobs, and in her distress, she accidentally pulled out the needle.

At that moment, Jiang Xue, dressed as a nurse, took the opportunity to enter. Moving with lightning speed, she inserted the needle directly into the medicine bottle she had brought.
