Chapter Fourteen: Amusing Anecdotes from the Filming

Once work got busy, time flew by swiftly, and before long, it was time for Wei Lai to log off. Perhaps to depict the real world under the night sky, the film "Better Days" featured many night scenes. For a while, the crew turned into night owls, staying up all night and sleeping during the day, causing the lead actresses to lose quite a bit of weight. Interestingly, the weight loss did make them look better on camera—even Ma Sitong’s shaved head became more appealing.
"Cut! Let's take a short break. We'll resume in 15 minutes."
Zhang Qianjun checked his phone; it was already 1 a.m. They were shooting the scene where Chen Nian loses control and pushes Wei Lai down the stairs, leading to Wei Lai’s death. Ma Sitong still lacked the emotional depth needed for the scene.
Director Liu Chang and the acting coach Zhang Songwen had spent a long time discussing it, but it still fell a bit short. For other scenes, they might have gotten by and fixed things in editing, but this was a continuous long take—from Wei Lai confronting Chen Nian to Chen Nian pushing her down the stairs. The shot could not be broken.
Zhang Songwen had been nagging bald Ma Sitong repeatedly, so much that his mouth was dry from talking.
Meanwhile, Zhang Qianjun crouched at the foot of the stairs, catching the actress several times. The 22-year-old’s exquisite figure was remarkable—she had just lost her baby fat but still had the firm, supple charm of youth. Kan Qingzi, who was quite curvaceous, made Zhang Qianjun’s fists clench involuntarily with the soft warmth pressed against him several times in succession.
While Zhang Songwen continued lecturing Ma Sitong about the mood of the scene, Kan Qingzi whispered complaints to Zhang Qianjun.
“Why are you holding me longer each time? There are so many people around.”
“That’s to protect you. What if I don’t catch you properly and you get hurt?”
Kan Qingzi glanced around cautiously and muttered softly, “But you can’t just keep fondling me endlessly, you know?”
“The flesh is right here. What’s wrong with a little touch?”
“The problem is, with you doing that, I can’t act properly.”
“Nonsense. Haven’t you noticed your performance getting better each take? Wei Lai is supposed to have that bitchy edge. As long as you’re unharmed, nothing else matters. Hurt you, then still be friends with you—that’s the carefree, self-centered attitude. Darling, you’re really getting into character.”
Kan Qingzi’s chest rose and fell rapidly at those words. How could this man make taking advantage of someone sound so noble? But one thing was good—he didn’t let anyone else protect her, afraid others wouldn’t do it right, and his eyes never left her, the tension palpable and genuine.
If Zhang Qianjun knew what she was thinking, he would surely laugh. Taking safety precautions was one thing, but mostly, how could he let others touch her?
On one side, the pair flirted and teased each other, while Zhang Songwen’s frustration grew; his already sparse hair was shedding by the handful. The exhausted crew showed their weariness too—especially the photography, lighting, and sound teams, who cursed under their breath. The constant trips up and down those dozens of stairs were truly torturous; many office workers didn’t get that much exercise in a day.
Ma Sitong sat there, dejected, feeling as though another take might bring her to tears.
Zhang Qianjun thought to himself that they had to finish today’s shoot no matter what; the camera track couldn’t stay overnight here, or they’d have to come back tomorrow night. So he decided to take on the role of acting coach himself for a moment.
He stepped forward, half-kneeling before Ma Sitong, staring intently at her.
“I want to say a few words to you.”
Ma Sitong, slightly flustered, replied,
“Okay, go ahead.”
“Chen Nian, you got accepted into a university in Beijing. Didn’t your mother cry holding you, saying you finally made it? You can leave this cursed place behind, say goodbye to your past. After you graduate and start working, you can even bring your mother to live with you, and the two of you can live well together.
But there’s someone who won’t let you leave. She tore your clothes, took naked photos of you, shaved your head in a patchy mess. She came after you not because she felt guilty or wanted to apologize, but because she had repeated a year of school. If she repeats again, her father won’t speak to her.
Listen to that—it’s serious. The daughter of a wealthy family’s father is angry and won’t talk to her, so she comes after you, telling you not to call the police to protect their father-daughter relationship. Everyone should give way and show understanding, right?
But Chen Nian, you don’t even have a father! You’re an orphan—your father died, your family is in debt, and your mother doesn’t dare go home! So she can bully you, curse you, hit you, have a group of people strip you in public, film your naked body, and upload it for everyone to see your disgrace!
Yes, you can endure all that to get away, but this bitch wants to be friends with you, saying it’s easy to be friends with someone like you. Listen—this bitch wants to take the university entrance exam for Beijing with you, go to Beijing with you, and with a friend like her, you’ll never escape this quagmire. Look how much she loves you.”
“Stop talking.”
Tears welled up in Ma Sitong’s eyes. She sobbed softly and turned her head away, avoiding Zhang Qianjun’s gaze.
“Look at me.”
A pair of large hands grabbed Ma Sitong’s head, forcing it back. His hands tightly cupped the entire head above the earlobes, blocking her peripheral vision so she could only look straight ahead. Their eyes were less than ten centimeters apart; they could even feel each other’s breath.
“Chen Nian, if you don’t make that noisy bitch shut up, she’ll always follow you;
If she follows you, this muddy world will follow you forever.”

“Let go of me! Let go!”
But the strong hands held her like iron clamps, leaving Ma Sitong unable to move.
Zhang Qianjun’s voice was coldI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
