Chapter 20: Ji Zifeng’s Revenge
“Alright, Old Bai, I won’t hold it against you this time,” Cai Heping finally relented. He cleared his throat and lowered his voice. “Just keep this between us, alright? At least spare some face for our proctology department.”
“Sure, I won’t tell anyone,” Bai Yunxiao replied with a faint smile.
Satisfied with Bai Yunxiao’s promise, Cai Heping nodded. As long as no one else found out, this matter could be treated as if it had never happened.
Meanwhile, Bai Yunxiao hung up the phone and casually placed it on the table, though the shock in his eyes had yet to fade.
Earlier, Lin Nan had come to him, expressing a desire to transfer a patient from the proctology department to the emergency department, personally oversee the treatment, and have the patient registered under his name. Bai Yunxiao had agreed without hesitation.
He had assumed Lin Nan would be stonewalled by the proctology department, but to his surprise, the man had actually succeeded in securing the patient for their emergency department.
This was an exceedingly rare occurrence.
Normally, it was the emergency department transferring patients out, not receiving them from other departments.
Reflecting on this, he shook his head silently.
He had a premonition that things were about to get lively in the emergency department.
Lin Nan brought Ji Guoping into one of the outpatient rooms in the emergency department.
“Mr. Ji, although your rectal tumor is benign, the surgery needs to be performed this morning. The sooner we operate, the better we can control the condition, and your recovery will be quicker,” Lin Nan explained after Ji Guoping took a seat.
“Alright, just make the arrangements. I’m ready anytime,” Ji Guoping said with a confident smile.
It was clear he trusted Lin Nan.
Lin Nan smiled in return. “Good. I’ll schedule it as soon as possible, within the next two or three days.”
If he could successfully perform this surgery on Ji Guoping, it would surely deepen the patient’s trust, perhaps even dependence, ensuring he would come to him with any future health issues.
Once a strong bond of trust was established, many things would become easier to handle.
What he needed now was to do his utmost to earn that trust.
Though it might seem calculating, a form of manipulation, it was the best way to uncover clues about his parents’ fatal accident while ensuring his own safety.
Ji Guoping naturally had no objections.
“Since you’re now receiving treatment in our emergency department, Mr. Ji, you’ll need to fill out a new medical record form,” Lin Nan continued. He pulled a blank form from the drawer and handed it along with a pen to Ji Guoping.
Ji Guoping chuckled heartily and quickly filled out the form.
In less than a minute, he had completed all the required information.
Lin Nan took the form and skimmed it swiftly.
When he reached the contact number section, a flicker of surprise crossed his mind.
The phone number listed was different from the one Xu Pingfeng had given him before.
—
Over the years, Ji Guoping had indeed changed his number.
“So you’re a traffic cop, huh? This time of year must be hectic,” Lin Nan casually made small talk.
“Definitely. With so many migrant workers returning home, Linhai City is packed. The roads are more crowded than usual, so traffic accidents have increased,” Ji Guoping said with a hint of helplessness.
“On top of that, the holiday season means more gatherings, and inevitably more drunk driving. The number of drunk drivers has multiplied, making things even busier.”
“It’s not just you traffic cops who are busy during the holidays; our hospital is swamped too,” Lin Nan admitted with a weary smile.
“Ha! Yeah, holidays mean the busiest times for traffic police and hospitals alike,” Ji Guoping laughed self-deprecatingly.
At that moment, his phone suddenly rang.
After hearing the caller, his brow furrowed. “Alright, I’m on my way,” he said abruptly before hanging up.
“Doctor Lin, I have some urgent matters to attend to. I’ll head out first. If you’re ready with the surgery arrangements, just call me anytime,” Ji Guoping told Lin Nan.
“Understood,” Lin Nan nodded.
Ji Guoping then hurriedly left.
Less than five minutes after Ji Guoping’s departure, Xiao Li rushed in.
“Doctor Lin, I just received news of a major traffic accident on Chaoyang Road. The hospital urgently needs our assistance. Director Bai has instructed you to head to the scene immediately for emergency rescue,” Xiao Li said urgently.
“A serious traffic accident?” Lin Nan’s voice deepened.
He recalled Ji Guoping’s hurried departure and felt a pang of suspicion.
Could Ji Guoping be rushing to handle that very accident?
“Got it. I’m leaving right now,” Lin Nan nodded and briskly exited the outpatient room.
Upon reaching the emergency building’s entrance, he saw Li Qin and Jiang Yuan waiting.
“Jiang Yuan? What are you doing here? Aren’t you still on leave?” Lin Nan looked at the burly Jiang Yuan in surprise.
During the New Year holidays, the emergency department staff took staggered days off. Lin Nan and Jiang Yuan had leave from the first to the third day, while Li Qin was off from the fourth to the sixth, returning on the seventh.
Jiang Yuan was now dressed in a white coat, clearly back on duty.
“Seeing how hard you’re working, how could I relax on leave?” Jiang Yuan shook his head.
“Besides, staying home bored me. Might as well come to the hospital and work overtime,” he added.
Lin Nan smiled faintly. “Exactly. What’s the point of leave? Better to be at work.”
“Let’s get in the ambulance and talk on the way,” Li Qin suggested.
Lin Nan and Jiang Yuan nodded and climbed into the ambulance together.
Once inside, Jiang Yuan glanced at Lin Nan and Li Qin with a trace of amazement. “You two have been quite busy these past few days.”
“Heh, Old Jiang, you don’t know. Lin has been working like a man possessed,” Li Qin chuckled. “Forget yesterday’s explosion incident—you, as a participant, know better than I do—let’s just talk about how Lin just ‘stole’ a patient from the proctology department.”
“Stole a patient from proctology?” Jiang Yuan was stunned. “Can the emergency department even do that?”
As an emergency doctor himself, he understood the awkward position their department held among the hospital divisions.
“Absolutely,” Li Qin said, glancing at Lin Nan with a gleeful sparkle as he recounted the recent event.
Jiang Yuan was dumbfounded, staring at Lin Nan. “You actually managed to get that patient?”
Lin Nan smiled and shook his head. “I wouldn’t call it stealing. I just believe our emergency department is better suited for the patient’s follow-up treatment. For the sake of the patient’s life and health, the transfer was necessary.”
Jiang Yuan’s mouth twitched. “Are you serious?”
“I know what you’re worried about. That patient isn’t critically ill and doesn’t rely on expensive life-support equipment. It’s just a benign rectal tumor that requires surgery. Conveniently, I’m the one who can perform it,” Lin Nan explained.
“Lin Nan, you really are becoming more versatile,” Jiang Yuan sighed in admiration.
“An emergency doctor has to know a bit of everything,” Lin Nan said with a grin.
Meanwhile, Ji Guoping was driving toward the accident scene.
His phone rang again during the drive.
Seeing the caller, he quickly pulled over.
As deputy captain of the traffic police brigade, it was ingrained in him never to answer calls while driving.
“Zifeng, what’s up?” he asked upon seeing it was his son.
“Dad, I won’t be coming home for lunch today. Just letting you know,” Ji Zifeng said from the other end.
“It’s the second day of the New Year. If you’re not coming home, where are you going?” Ji Guoping frowned.
“I’m hanging out with friends. Gotta go now. Bye,” Ji Zifeng replied before hanging up.
Ji Guoping put down his phone and shook his head.
Well, it’s the New Year. If he wants to have fun, let him be.
At that moment, Ji Zifeng sat in the lobby of a hotel, a backpack beside him.
He was waiting for that scoundrel to arrive.
Glancing at the backpack, a vengeful gleam sparked in his eyes.
Inside the bag was a box containing ten ping-pong balls. When that scoundrel showed up, he intended to teach him a proper lesson.
