Chapter 27: Lin Nan, how could it be you?
Bai Yunxiao watched with astonishment. As the deputy director of the emergency department, he was well-versed in these three complex techniques and had mastered them himself. However, the catch was that he had only achieved this mastery after years of performing countless surgeries and accumulating long-term experience. Lin Nan was so young—having only recently finished his master’s degree—yet he had already mastered all three? It was simply inconceivable.
He exchanged a look with Yuan Gang, both of them seeing the shock mirrored in the other’s eyes.
"Old Yuan, are these three techniques really that difficult to master?" Xia Minghui asked with a bewildered expression.
"It took me fifteen years to master them," Yuan Gang stated solemnly.
"I spent thirteen years," Bai Yunxiao sighed softly.
Xia Minghui fell silent. He had clearly underestimated Lin Nan’s talent and capability.
"I was worried that Lin Nan might not have the strength for this, but it seems there was nothing to worry about," Yuan Gang remarked with emotion. "With these techniques in his arsenal, combined with his youth and stamina, performing this surgery perfectly was not impossible."
"No wonder the lad was so confident; he truly has the skills to back it up."
Bai Yunxiao nodded in agreement. He honestly hadn't expected Lin Nan to deliver such a massive surprise.
After four and a half hours, the surgery finally concluded. Just as Yuan Gang had predicted, the procedure was a complete success. Seeing the operation come to a flawless end, Bai Yunxiao let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Yuan Gang wore a complicated expression as he lamented, "I usually need five hours for this kind of nerve repair surgery, but Lin Nan finished it in four and a half, and his execution was even better than mine. He is truly exceptional."
Xia Minghui nodded slightly. At this point, he no longer harbored any doubts about Lin Nan.
Yuan Gang hesitated for a moment before saying to Bai Yunxiao, "Old Bai, can we discuss something?"
As if he already knew what was coming, Bai Yunxiao smiled faintly. "Sure, but anything related to Lin Nan is off the table."
Seeing his intentions laid bare, Yuan Gang felt a bit awkward, but he persisted. "Lin Nan has immense talent in the field of neurology. If he were to join our neurology department, he would have more advantages than staying in the emergency department, and it would be more beneficial for his future development."
Bai Yunxiao dismissed this, saying, "What, you think staying in our emergency department means he has no future? The emergency department is a comprehensive unit that demands more from its doctors. For someone like Lin Nan right now, staying in the emergency department is the optimal choice."
Yuan Gang shook his head. "I won't argue with you about that. If Lin Nan is truly willing to come to our neurology department, I hope you won't stand in his way. After all, it should be his own choice." He recognized Lin Nan as an incredibly gifted talent and couldn't help but want to recruit him for neurology.
"Fine. If Lin Nan is truly willing to go to your neurology department, I have no objections," Bai Yunxiao shrugged.
Yuan Gang felt a surge of joy. He was confident he could persuade Lin Nan.
Inside the operating room, Lin Nan exhaled quietly after successfully completing the procedure. It was finally over. He checked the time; it was already 9:30 PM. As he began to relax, he noticed everyone in the room staring at him with unblinking eyes, filled with admiration.
Li Qin and Jiang Yuan looked at Lin Nan with complex expressions, sighing inwardly. They had previously considered themselves the elite among their peers and carried a certain sense of pride, but today, that pride had been thoroughly crushed by Lin Nan. Only now did they realize just how massive the gap between individuals could be.
The anesthesiologist and the two nurses also gazed at Lin Nan with burning curiosity, their emotions still running high. Before today, they never would have imagined that such a young doctor could possess such terrifying skill. Based on what Lin Nan had displayed, his surgical prowess was on par with some of the department's deputy directors, or even the department heads themselves! And this was a doctor from the emergency department! With Lin Nan there, who would ever dare to look down on the emergency department again?
Lin Nan smiled at them. "Thank you all for your hard work today."
The anesthesiologist shook his head. "We didn't do much. You’re the one who performed surgery for eight or nine hours straight, Doctor Lin. That’s real hard work."
"Indeed, Doctor Lin, you’re the one who worked the hardest," added the nurse who had been wiping sweat from his brow during the procedure, her voice bright and pleasant.
Li Qin handed Lin Nan a bottle of glucose. Lin Nan didn't stand on ceremony; he took it, removed his mask, and drank deeply. Some surgeries lasted for hours without breaks for food or water, so the best way to recover stamina afterward was a bottle of glucose. Li Qin and Jiang Yuan, who had been under intense concentration for the past eight or nine hours, were also exhausted and each drank a bottle to replenish their strength.
After finishing the glucose, the three of them finally felt their energy returning.
"Lin Nan, how did you learn those three techniques you used—nerve grafting, nerve anastomosis, and local nerve decompression?" Jiang Yuan couldn't help but ask with a bitter smile. "I’ve been studying them, but my progress is slow, and I’m nowhere near ready to perform them independently."
"Exactly," Li Qin added quickly. "I’ve been studying local nerve decompression, but without clinical experience, I'm learning very slowly. How did you learn so fast?"
Today had been a real eye-opener. The techniques Lin Nan displayed were no worse than those seen in videos by world-class experts. This meant Lin Nan had truly mastered all three. They found it grueling to learn just one, yet Lin Nan had mastered three—it made them both envious and filled with admiration.
Lin Nan’s eyes flickered slightly. How should he explain this?
He thought for a moment and said earnestly, "I often watch relevant surgical videos in my spare time, then I carefully analyze and study them. That’s how I learned them, little by little."
"You can learn them just by watching videos?" Li Qin exclaimed.
Jiang Yuan also found it hard to believe. The two exchanged glances, feeling deeply shocked. Could it be that he was a legendary super-genius who could master techniques just by watching? If that were the case, they felt somewhat relieved. There was no helping it; this was pure talent, and it wasn't something that could be envied away.
"Come on, Old Lin, if your talent is that high, why have you been keeping such a low profile?" Li Qin asked, at a loss for words.
Lin Nan shrugged. "Keeping a low profile is never a bad thing." To avoid further questioning, he quickly said to the two nurses, "Let’s take the patient out. He needs plenty of rest and recovery."
The nurses nodded and wheeled the still-unconscious Liu Jialiang out of the operating room.
"Let’s go out and explain the situation to the family," Lin Nan said to Li Qin and Jiang Yuan.
The three of them stepped out of the operating room. Outside, Liu Jiamin, Xu Weiwei, and Han Gui were still waiting. Seeing her brother being wheeled out, Liu Jiamin rushed forward, asking anxiously, "How is my brother?"
Before the nurses could respond, Xu Weiwei, who had seen Lin Nan walk out behind them, gasped, "Lin Nan? How could it be you?"
