Chen Jing could not help frowning as she watched Lin Nan’s movements on the screen.

Was this all he was capable of?

She shook her head lightly, deeply disappointed.

“Xiaojing, tell us what problems there are with Lin Nan’s technique,” Cai Heping said, looking at her.

Chen Jing nodded and began softly, “Generally speaking, in a laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer, an incision of about ten centimeters must be made in the abdomen to provide a better field of view.”

“If the incision is too small—less than five centimeters—it becomes very difficult to fully assess the condition of the patient’s rectum and locate the tumor precisely.”

“Strictly speaking, this is the most basic knowledge required for rectal surgery. Lin Nan should know it, but his current approach is rather puzzling.”

Wu Wenxuan gave a faint smile. “There’s nothing puzzling about it. He’s only a resident physician, and this is probably his first time performing the procedure. It’s perfectly normal for him to lack experience.”

Cai Heping shook his head as well, somewhat disappointed by Lin Nan’s performance.

At that moment, Bai Yunxiao said calmly, “For an ordinary doctor, what you’ve said would be correct. But the problem is that Lin Nan is no ordinary doctor.”

Cai Heping frowned slightly. “What makes him so special?”

The moment he finished speaking, he saw the tumor on the rectum through the incision Lin Nan had made.

He was utterly stunned.

Lin Nan had actually located the tumor with complete precision?

As Chen Jing had said, they could not accurately determine the tumor’s location through eyesight and experience alone. That was why the incision had to be made larger—to make the area more visible and the tumor easier to find.

Yet Lin Nan’s incision was less than five centimeters. In theory, locating the tumor through such a small opening should have been extremely difficult. That was why Cai Heping had assumed Lin Nan simply lacked experience.

Now, however, it seemed that his judgment had been premature.

Through the screen, Chen Jing saw the tumor clearly exposed within the incision and was even more secretly astonished.

Had Lin Nan already identified the tumor’s exact location beforehand, and made such a small incision precisely there?

As this thought occurred to her, her expression gradually grew solemn.

It seemed she had underestimated Lin Nan.

The smile on Wu Wenxuan’s face slowly froze as he stared in disbelief at Lin Nan on the screen and at the tumor exposed through the incision in the patient’s body.

The tumor was purplish red and approximately two centimeters long. Lin Nan had inserted his instrument at exactly the right spot, and the incision was less than five centimeters long. It was obvious that he had known both the tumor’s size and its location before making the cut.

He suddenly felt that he had laughed far too soon.

For a moment, the three doctors from the colorectal surgery department fell silent.

Seeing Cai Heping remain speechless, Bai Yunxiao raised one corner of his mouth and arched an eyebrow. “During the gas explosion earlier, Lin Nan found the optimal incision point on that little girl in less than a second. Do you really think he did that through sheer luck?”

Cai Heping remained silent for a while before finally sighing. “It seems I underestimated him.”

Watching Lin Nan’s precise technique on the screen, Chen Jing’s cheeks grew slightly warm.

She had watched the video of Lin Nan saving the girl. At the time, she had believed that luck must have played a major role in his ability to find the optimal incision point so quickly.

But now it appeared that Lin Nan had relied entirely on skill.

In the operating room, Lin Nan was cutting away the tumor on the rectum with practiced, decisive movements.

His hands were swift and steady. Following the intestinal wall, he removed the two-centimeter tumor without causing the slightest damage to the surrounding tissue.

The excision was exceptionally clean.

As Cai Heping watched the purplish-red tumor resting in the tray, the corner of his eye twitched slightly, and he was once again deeply shaken.

The cut was simply too clean.

Even if he had performed the surgery himself, he would not have dared claim that he could necessarily have done it better than Lin Nan.

Chen Jing’s beautiful eyes shone brightly, and her lips parted slightly.

Was Lin Nan really this skilled?

Most doctors could easily nick the patient’s intestinal wall while removing a tumor. Although such an injury was not particularly serious, it could still affect the patient’s recovery to some extent.

Yet Lin Nan’s hand had remained perfectly steady. He had made not a single mistake and had not caused the slightest damage to the patient’s intestinal wall.

The surgery could only be described as outstanding.

Watching Lin Nan’s calm and steady technique on the large screen, Cai Heping turned to Wu Wenxuan beside him and said solemnly, “As I recall, you performed this surgery a month ago. You accidentally cut the patient’s intestinal wall, causing internal bleeding and nearly resulting in a medical dispute.”

Wu Wenxuan’s expression stiffened when Cai Heping suddenly brought up the matter.

“Yes... yes, that did happen,” Wu Wenxuan admitted awkwardly.

“Now look at the surgery Lin Nan has performed. He’s far better than you,” Cai Heping said with a shake of his head, his expression filled with exasperation at Wu Wenxuan’s lack of progress.

After witnessing Lin Nan’s superb technique, he was thoroughly convinced.

The colorectal surgery department had lost to Lin Nan this time, and they had no grounds for complaint.

Cai Heping accepted the defeat wholeheartedly.

Being publicly criticized by Cai Heping for falling short of Lin Nan, Wu Wenxuan’s face immediately flushed red.

He was an attending physician, while Lin Nan was merely a resident. Yet Cai Heping had actually told him to his face that he was inferior to Lin Nan.

Did he have no dignity at all?

Still, he did not dare argue and could only swallow his anger.

Cai Heping rose to his feet and sighed. “Old Bai, your emergency department really has found itself a treasure. It’s enough to make anyone envious.”

Judging from the ability Lin Nan had just displayed, throughout the entire colorectal surgery department, only the department chief and several deputy chiefs could truly be mentioned in the same breath as him.

But every one of them had reached their current level only after years of accumulating clinical experience and honing their skills. Lin Nan, by contrast, was only in his twenties, yet his abilities in this field were already no weaker than theirs.

It was impossible not to marvel at that.

Bai Yunxiao beamed with delight and waved his hand dismissively. “He’s all right. Lin Nan really is a reassuring young man.”

“Not just Lin Nan. Li Qin and Jiang Yuan are excellent as well. Their fundamentals are solid, and they have strong mental composure. They’ve both performed very steadily. Given enough time, they too could become the backbone of the emergency department.” Cai Heping continued to lavish praise upon them without reservation.

“These three young men have incredibly promising futures.”

Bai Yunxiao smiled faintly, in complete agreement.

He had previously focused on cultivating Li Qin and Jiang Yuan, while paying little attention to Lin Nan. What he had not expected was that Lin Nan would now shine so brilliantly.

Chen Jing looked at Bai Yunxiao expectantly. “Director Bai, may I meet Doctor Lin after he finishes the surgery?”

“What do you want with him?” Bai Yunxiao asked.

Chen Jing replied sincerely, “I’d like to ask Doctor Lin about some surgical techniques. I think the procedure he performed is highly worthy of study.”

Seeing how highly Chen Jing regarded Lin Nan, Wu Wenxuan said sourly, “Chen Jing, I’ve never seen you ask any of the other young doctors in our colorectal surgery department for advice.”

He had always been fond of Chen Jing and had hinted at his feelings more than once, but she had ignored him every time.

So naturally, seeing how interested she was in Lin Nan left him extremely displeased.
