Chapter 26: The Blond-Haired Man Dies Again

Unlike Wang Yifu, who had hurried away, Cao Kun was in no rush at all.
He drained the beer from his bottle, then leisurely picked up two more bites of food with his chopsticks.
Only after swallowing them did he calmly light a cigarette.
As pale smoke drifted from his lips, he waited until he had smoked nearly a third of it before rising from the sofa. He straightened his clothes and walked away.
……
Nine-thirty that evening.
Beside the entrance to Hongfu Residential Complex, Wang Yifu stood with a cigarette between his lips, silently watching everyone who entered or left.
Hongfu was a newly built residential complex, completed less than a year ago. Its occupancy rate was not even one-eighth, so there were very few residents.
The complex was also somewhat remote, which made the flow of people even thinner.
More than a hundred meters away, a young man in a baseball cap was silently watching Wang Yifu.
It was Cao Kun.
Cao Kun had been keeping an eye on Wang Yifu for an hour. However, since the blond punk had yet to appear, nothing had happened so far.
Cao Kun glanced at the time on his phone and murmured, “It’s already nine-thirty. We may not even see that blond punk tonight. Looks like my luck isn’t very good today.”
Although Cao Kun had guided Wang Yifu into searching for the blond punk, he had never truly expected the two of them to meet that very day.
The seed of hatred had already been planted. As long as Wang Shanshan and Bai Jing remained under his roof, the situation would stay under his control.
In other words, he had plenty of time. If one day wasn’t enough, then two; if two weren’t enough, then three. As long as the blond punk did not move elsewhere, Wang Yifu would eventually run into him.
And once the two men met, Cao Kun’s plan would succeed.
With these thoughts in mind, Cao Kun was just about to watch a little longer before heading home when his eyes narrowed and the corners of his mouth suddenly lifted.
At the entrance to Hongfu Residential Complex, a young man wearing slippers, shorts, and a T-shirt was sauntering out. He was talking on the phone as he walked.
It was the blond thug.
If Cao Kun could recognize him from more than a hundred meters away, then Wang Yifu, who had been waiting at the entrance, could recognize him even more easily.
Seeing the blond man leave the complex while talking on the phone and head in another direction, Wang Yifu grabbed his beer bottle and followed.
Because Hongfu was located in a remote area, its streetlights and other infrastructure were poorly developed.
At last, when they reached a relatively dark stretch of road, the blond man ended his call.
That was when Wang Yifu, seeing that no one was nearby, charged forward and smashed the beer bottle over the thug’s head.

Bang!
The bottle shattered instantly. The blond man staggered and nearly fell flat on his face.
He shook his head vigorously, but before he could regain his balance, Wang Yifu kicked him several meters away. Then he mounted him and began pounding him with blow after blow.
“You bastard! How dare you touch my woman? I’ll beat you to death!”
After a furious barrage of punches, the blond man’s face was battered and bloody.
Wang Yifu seized him by the collar and snarled, “Where’s that bitch Bai Jing? And where’s my daughter?”
Blood streamed from the blond man’s nose and mouth. His eyes were dazed as he stammered, “W-What Bai Jing? I—I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“You don’t know?”
Thinking the blond man was only pretending to be confused, Wang Yifu began raining down another series of heavy punches.
After repeating this several times, Wang Yifu finally stopped.
He could not keep going. Another beating might leave the blond man unable to survive.
Yet even after taking such a beating, the blond man still had not confessed. It seemed Bai Jing and Wang Shanshan truly were not with him.
Looking at the blond man, who was now nearly unconscious, Wang Yifu rose and spat viciously.
“Damn you, you bastard.”
After cursing him, Wang Yifu delivered one more kick before leaving, panting heavily.
However, not long after Wang Yifu departed, a figure wearing a baseball cap and face mask appeared at the scene.
Cao Kun glanced at the nearby surveillance cameras and nearly laughed aloud.
“What a perfectly timed kick. It sent him straight out of the cameras’ range.”
When it came to surveillance coverage and blind spots, Cao Kun could be called an expert.
Fighting in prison resulted in punishment, so whenever someone wanted to deal with another inmate, they first had to lure him into a blind spot before making a move.
Cao Kun had spent ten years in prison. He had long since developed an instinctive understanding of what area a camera could monitor from any given angle.
With a single glance at the nearby cameras, he could tell how far they reached and which places lay beyond their view.
The place where Wang Yifu first attacked had been within the surveillance zone.
But after kicking the blond man and mounting him to continue the beating, he had moved beyond the cameras’ range.
That kick had sent the blond man precisely into a blind spot.
“Looks like even Heaven is helping me,” Cao Kun murmured.
He reached down and picked up a shard of beer bottle glass, about four or five centimeters long.

He was wearing a pair of gloves.
Cao Kun took two steps and came to the blond man’s side.
The blond man was nearly unconscious, his face covered in blood. Through his hazy eyes, he could make out someone approaching, but he could not see the person’s features clearly.
“Help… help me. P-Please call an ambulance…”
Cao Kun did not answer. Instead, he crouched down and held the shard of beer bottle glass against the blond man’s head, gauging the distance.
“Brother, be a good person in your next life. Remember, rape is wrong.”
……
Ten twenty that evening.
Cao Kun quietly opened the door to his apartment.
Wang Shanshan was still sitting on the sofa watching television, while Bai Jing was in the bedroom. Cao Kun had no idea whether she was asleep.
The moment she saw him come through the door, Wang Shanshan hurried off the sofa and ran over.
“Why are you only coming back now? How is my father?”
Cao Kun smiled bitterly and rubbed his temples.
“Oh, Wang叔 can really hold his liquor. In the end, he drank me under the table. I opened my eyes, and it was already this late.”
“But don’t worry. I already spoke with him. I told him how deeply sorry you were about what happened yesterday, and that you regretted it so much you had slapped yourself several times. You even asked me to buy two bottles of good liquor so I could keep him company.”
“He was quite comforted when he heard that. He said he no longer blamed you.”
Wang Shanshan immediately brightened. Then she suddenly lowered her voice.
“Then… did my father say why he got into a fight with my mother?”
“This…” Cao Kun knitted his brows, looking troubled. “Forget it. You should let your father tell you himself.”
“Besides, I really think you should go see him. He has quite a few injuries, especially the scratches on his face. He is your father, after all, and he does not blame you in the least. Make time to visit him tomorrow. I’ll go with you.”
Wang Shanshan nodded firmly.
“Mm. I’ll go first thing tomorrow morning. Is he asleep now?”
“I don’t know,” Cao Kun replied. “Wang叔 drank me unconscious. When I woke up, I was alone in the house, and I had no idea where he had gone. Maybe he went to the hospital to have his wounds bandaged. After that, I came home by myself.”
Wang Shanshan nodded again. She looked at Cao Kun and smiled, then rose onto her toes and kissed him on the cheek.
“Hehe, thank you. Go take a shower. I’ve already heated the water for you.”
Cao Kun grinned foolishly.
“All right, I’ll go wash up first. I reek of smoke and alcohol—it’s awful. You should get some rest too.”
