Chapter 11: Let's Get a Divorce!
Li An'an's heart trembled, her face growing pale. Truth be told, though she had been somewhat disappointed with Mo Han before today, Mo Han had always been sincere in his affection for her, and back then she had willingly married him. Moreover, their daughter was already four years old now. To divorce Mo Han all of a sudden—she truly found herself incapable of such a thing. After all, feelings accumulated over so many years could not simply be cast aside on a whim.
But Mo Han had caused such a grave disaster today, and the Tan family had already made it known that they intended to kill Mo Han and their entire family. This left her with no choice at all.
“An'an, what are you hesitating for? This is the only way!” Xu Fang stepped forward and took Li An'an’s hand. “An'an, not only is Mo Han useless, he’s a magnet for trouble. Even if the Tan family doesn’t kill him, your uncle’s family won’t let him off either—they’ll have someone beat him to death sooner or later! Besides, with your qualities, even if you have a child, there will still be plenty of men willing to marry you. Any one of them would be a hundred times better than Mo Han.”
Li An'an was torn, locked in a silent inner struggle.
Xu Fang exchanged a glance with Li Xiande, who understood and added his own persuasion. “An'an, divorcing Mo Han is entirely because he’s brought this calamity that threatens all our lives. Legally, it’s his fault—he’ll be left with nothing, and we’ll get back that hundred million. Even if your grandfather drives us out of the family, we won’t starve. An'an, don’t hesitate any longer—we only have three days left!”
Li An'an still said nothing, her face growing ever paler.
Xu Fang turned to Li Xiaoxiao, signaling her to add her own words. Li Xiaoxiao, looking worried, hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Sis, I—I’m not really trying to persuade you to divorce my brother-in-law… It’s just, you know what kind of people the Tan family are. If they dare to say such things, they’ll see it through—or risk making themselves a laughingstock. They won’t let us go… What I mean is, the situation is dire now. Anyway, brother-in-law is sure to be killed by the Tan family. If you don’t divorce him, our whole family will die with him. But if you do, maybe only he’ll die. Besides, Xiaoxiao is only four. You can’t just stand by and watch her die with us too, right?”
Li An'an’s face was as white as snow. She struggled inwardly, her expression growing more wretched.
“Let’s discuss this tomorrow. Tomorrow, I’ll give you an answer.” In the end, Li An'an spoke these words and returned to her room, skipping dinner altogether. But at a time like this, she had no appetite anyway.
At ten o’clock that night, after two hours of isolation, Li An'an left once more for the hospital.
“Why have you come back?” Mo Han asked.
Li An'an answered casually, “I can’t sleep, so I came to keep Xiaoxiao company.”
“But I’m a little afraid to be alone. Why don’t you stay with me as well?”
Mo Han gave a slight nod; whether or not Li An'an came, he had planned to stay and watch over his daughter tonight. His heart was filled not only with resentment toward the Tan family, but also guilt toward his child. He always blamed himself for awakening too late—if only it had happened a moment sooner, his daughter would never have been taken by Li Bing to the Tan family, nor would her corneas have been taken.
He reproached himself; it was his delayed awakening that had caused his daughter so much pain.
Li An'an sat by the hospital bed, gazing at her sleeping child, her heart aching. Her eyes drifted to Mo Han, her gaze shifting from guilt to reluctance, and then to deep affection.
Mo Han found it strange and asked, “Why do you keep staring at me like that?”
Li An'an started, then shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
Mo Han raised an eyebrow, sensing that something was weighing on her mind.
“Mo Han, let me ask you something. Today, when you crippled Tan Xiaorong, did you not consider the consequences?” Li An'an asked suddenly.
Mo Han froze, finally understanding why Li An'an was so distraught—it was fear of retribution from the Tan family.
He smiled gently. “Don’t worry. I don’t take the Tan family seriously.”
Li An'an felt a surge of disappointment. “When you crippled Tan Xiaorong, did you even think about me and Xiaoxiao? Tan Xiaorong is the heir to the Tan family, and you left him a cripple. Do you think the Tan family will let us go?”
Perhaps out of fear, Li An'an’s emotions grew agitated and her voice rose.
Mo Han nodded. “I did consider it. An'an, trust me. If I dared cripple Tan Xiaorong, it’s because I have the strength to stand against the Tan family. Truly—I don’t fear them at all. Believe me, in three days’ time, I’ll make the Tan family pay a terrible price. If they refuse to see reason, I won’t hesitate to erase them from this world.”
His eyes shone with unwavering confidence.
But to Li An'an, these words only filled her with deeper disappointment.
She believed that Mo Han was now capable of fighting, and could be ruthless—but this was the Tan family, the very family that the other great clans avoided at all costs. In their eyes, she and Mo Han were nothing but ordinary people, even less than ants. No matter how strong Mo Han was in a fight, what did he have to challenge the Tan family?
“Mo Han, to be honest, I have never been so disappointed in you as I am today. Truly—you can be lacking in ability, you can be poor and powerless, but you cannot be arrogant and reckless. Because your arrogance only puts me and Xiaoxiao in danger. I cannot gamble my family’s safety for your bravado. I can’t let our lives be threatened by your ignorance!”
Li An'an took a deep breath, her mind turning over how to utter the words that could not be unsaid. She had worked herself up, but she knew that once she spoke them, there would be no turning back.
Mo Han sighed, at a loss for words. He knew that even if he demonstrated unparalleled strength at this moment, Li An'an would never believe he could contend with the Tan family. On the contrary, she would only see him as a brute, a reckless man—her worry would only deepen.
“An'an, trust me. I won’t let you or our daughter be hurt again. I truly have the power to make the Tan family disappear, and it won’t bring harm to either of you!” Mo Han sat beside her, reaching out to take her hands, speaking with earnest sincerity.
Li An'an had wanted to struggle a bit longer, but upon hearing Mo Han’s naive words, her face went cold. She pulled her hands sharply from his grasp and said quietly but firmly:
“Mo Han, I’ve made up my mind. Let’s get a divorce.”
