Chapter 131: I Will Repay It for You
"Audi A8?"
Xu Hong paused, then laughed. "Village Chief Wu, that’s a luxury car worth over a million. Who among us could afford that? You must have mistaken it for someone else’s."
Village Chief Wu replied, "People said it was coming to your house. Right, it seemed to be driven by Xu Fang’s family. There was a traffic jam earlier, so they parked it over there. How could I be wrong? They couldn't possibly not recognize Xu Fang."
"What? Xu Fang’s family?" Xu Hong and the others turned their heads in unison to look at Li An’an, their faces filled with disbelief.
"My apologies. It’s mine. I’ll go move it inside." Mo Han nodded apologetically toward Village Chief Wu and rose to head outside.
"An’an, your family bought a car?" Xu Hong asked, her face full of astonishment.
"Yes, we bought it a while ago," Li An’an replied indifferently. She was quite speechless when it came to her aunt.
"Really? That’s a luxury car worth over a million! Let’s go, let’s go out and take a look." Xu Hong didn't believe for a second that Li An’an’s family could afford a luxury car. In her view, they probably couldn't even afford a used one.
Li Xue and the others followed them out. The few people helping out, who enjoyed a bit of excitement, tagged along as well. Only Li An’an, Xu Kai, and Xu Jin remained seated.
"An’an, did your family really buy a car?" Xu Kai asked.
"Yes, Uncle, our company is doing quite well lately," Li An’an nodded.
"Well, it’s good to see you’ve made it through the hard times," Xu Kai said with a nod.
"Is your father not working anymore?" asked the second uncle, Xu Jin.
"He is. He’s the general manager of our pharmaceutical factory now," Li An’an said proudly.
"I thought your grandfather didn't value him?" Xu Jin asked, surprised.
"Second Uncle, you might not know this, but the pharmaceutical factory belongs entirely to our family now," Li An’an explained.
"Oh, that’s great! It seems your grandfather still thinks quite highly of your family," Xu Jin laughed.
Li An’an smiled but didn't offer any further explanation. By this time, Mo Han had driven the car into the Xu family courtyard, where he found Xu Hong and the others standing by.
Seeing Mo Han actually step out of the Audi A8, she couldn't help but gasp. It really was the latest model Audi A8, and it looked brand new—it couldn't have been bought long ago. She felt quite sour, and her face burned with embarrassment, especially recalling how she had just been boasting about her family's plans to trade up for a Volkswagen worth over a hundred thousand. Though no one had physically slapped her, her face felt stinging hot.
"Aunt, you mentioned earlier that An’an and her family owed you ten thousand, right? Here is twenty thousand; the extra is for interest," Mo Han said as he walked up to Li Xue and handed her two neatly bundled stacks of cash.
"Ah?" Li Xue was stunned. She looked at the twenty thousand in her hands, feeling a stir of excitement, but she was even more shocked. Li An’an’s family had actually made it through their troubles—not only that, but they were doing better than ever! She remembered that the car Li Xiande used to drive was only a domestic model worth a little over a hundred thousand.
The helpers standing nearby looked on with envy, one after another praising how Li An’an’s family was on the rise again. Mo Han couldn't be bothered with them and walked straight into the house.
Xu Hong and the others followed. She looked at Li An’an and shook her head. "Li An’an, if your family doesn't have the money, you don't have to rent a luxury car. You’d be better off spending that money on gifts for your grandmother. You’re just puffing yourself up to look bigger than you are."
She refused to believe that Li An’an’s family had turned their fortunes around. She knew their situation all too well; only last year they had begged to borrow twenty thousand from her, and she hadn't lent it to them.
*Rented?*
The crowd paused, then quickly nodded, as if they suddenly understood. They also knew a bit about Li An’an’s family and agreed that the car outside couldn't possibly belong to them. Thinking this, they shook their heads, feeling that Li An’an’s family was truly hypocritical. To save face, they had actually gone to rent a luxury car—it was disgusting.
"That’s enough, that’s enough. I think you people just can’t stand to see Li An’an’s family doing well. Let’s eat," said the eldest uncle, Xu Kai, unable to watch any longer.
"Little Kai, what do you mean by that? What do you mean we can’t stand to see them doing well?" Xu Hong glared at him, clearly displeased. "Their family isn't doing well at all. Do you really believe they bought that car?"
"Big sister, can’t you say a little less? Why must you target An’an’s family? We’re all family; don't let outsiders laugh at us," Xu Jin added. He believed what Li An’an said; she had been a well-behaved girl since childhood with good character, and he didn't believe she would lie to them.
"Xu Jin, so now you and your brother are going to target me?" Xu Hong looked at Xu Jin with malice. "If that’s the case, then pay me back that ten thousand you owe me!"
Xu Jin’s expression turned ugly. This older sister of his really made his blood boil. She was decades old and still so petty, especially toward a younger relative like Li An’an.
"Don't worry," Xu Jin said, fueled by spite. "Once we’re done with Father’s grave, I’ll take out a high-interest loan if I have to, just to pay you back!"
"Second Uncle, you owe my aunt ten thousand, right? I’ll pay it for you," Mo Han said suddenly.
He finished his sentence and walked back outside. Two minutes later, he returned with fifty thousand yuan from the car. As he placed the five bundles of cash on the table, the entire room fell into an oppressive silence.
