Chapter Six: The Lie Family Falls Victim to Robbery
Mo Ben led Su Yi toward the meeting room. As soon as Su Yi stepped through the doors, a woman in a flowing red dress filled his entire vision, like a flame flickering and burning without end.
Mo Ben advanced a few steps and spoke in a gentle voice, “Miss, Su Yi is here.”
A graceful and alluring smile appeared on Maya’s face. Her beautiful eyes rested on Su Yi, the corners of her lips curving with a hint of playful charm. “Su Yi, little brother, you’re here.”
Her soft and bewitching voice was like a cool spring flowing straight into the depths of his heart.
What a temptress! She’s simply impossible to resist! Su Yi howled inwardly, forcing himself to stay alert and dispel any stray thoughts. He greeted her with a hint of respectful deference, “Sister Maya.”
Though his actual age should be similar to Maya’s, perhaps even older, he could hardly argue the point—having taken over another’s body, he now appeared only eighteen, a youth compared to the mature Maya. In this context, “little brother” suited him well enough.
Yet among all present, only Su Yi had the privilege of calling her “Sister Maya.” Others could only address her as “Miss Maya,” and this was one of the reasons Su Yi was so resented. How could a useless nobody like you be so close to Miss Maya? If not for you, surely the goddess of my heart would spare me a glance!
There was a time when calling her “Sister Maya” came easily to Su Yi, but now he felt just a touch of trepidation. Calming himself, he shifted his gaze to another figure in the room and offered a mild smile. “Captain Deyuan.”
Deyuan’s eyes flickered as Su Yi entered, and when Su Yi greeted him, he snorted softly without reply.
Maya glanced at Deyuan, a trace of resignation passing quickly across her face. “Deyuan, what news is there of the Lie family?”
Deyuan replied solemnly, “According to information we’ve gathered, the attack on the Lie family last night can be confirmed as true.”
At these words, Maya’s delicate brows knitted in thought, lending her a singular charm. “Was the assailant truly an Earth-tier cultivator?”
“That is precisely what puzzles me,” Deyuan said gravely, bowing his head slightly. “By rights, no Earth-tier cultivator would do such a thing, and yet all signs indicate that it was indeed the case.”
“So, it seems the Lie family has been dealt a terrible blow,” Maya said with a light laugh, raising a hand to her lips, then turned to Mo Ben. “Uncle Mo Ben, what’s your opinion?”
Mo Ben shook his head and sighed. “Last night, I did sense the aura of an Earth-tier master.”
Deyuan and Su Yi both felt a jolt at this. If an Earth-tier cultivator wished to hide their presence, it would be next to impossible to detect. They’d been with Mo Ben for three years, yet had seen him act only rarely and never quite grasped his true strength.
In the face of the unknown, mysterious people or things always inspire fear.
Mo Ben glanced at Su Yi, his eyes carrying a strange light. “And you, Su Yi? Did you notice anything unusual last night?”
Deyuan and Maya both knew Su Yi possessed a remarkable spiritual perception, so they looked to him expectantly.
“Me?” Su Yi was surprised to be asked. He pondered briefly, then shook his head. “I fell asleep early last night and noticed nothing out of the ordinary.” As he spoke, his gaze flickered almost imperceptibly toward Deyuan.
There had been something unusual last night—the mystical jade pendant and the blood-red substance had left Su Yi deeply shaken. If he hadn’t felt the power coursing through his body, he’d have thought it all a dream…
Deyuan met Su Yi’s gaze, a sneer tugging at his lips, and then turned to Maya. “Miss Maya, I believe we should strengthen the auction house’s defenses.”
“Oh?” Maya looked at Deyuan with a smile that seemed to hide some inscrutable intent.
Noting the snowy skin at Maya’s throat and the curve of her chest, Deyuan swallowed discreetly before shifting his gaze. “Yes, Miss. According to our sources, the mysterious assailant last night was exceptionally ruthless—dismembering victims and leaving the ground soaked with blood. Dozens were killed or wounded, including three Lie family elders at the Douluo level. We must remain vigilant.”
For the Yousiman Auction House, security was always tight, day or night. Every item within was priceless—rare herbs, deadly weapons, high-level techniques—any one of which would incite envy among the city’s many factions.
Thus, spies from various powers surrounded the auction house, ready to report the slightest disturbance. But as the largest trading house in Changling City, Yousiman monopolized vast resources and reaped enormous profits, drawing endless jealousy and resentment.
Competition among the city’s factions was fierce, even without direct rivalry. When it came to goods and auctions that spanned numerous industries, the stakes were even higher.
Take the Lie family, for example—the city’s most powerful clan, with a hand in many trades. One of their main businesses was the trade of medicinal herbs, but Yousiman’s volume rivaled or even surpassed theirs.
Where profits are great, danger is never far. Plenty of people harbored designs on the auction house, but Yousiman had survived Changling’s cutthroat world for years—no small feat. And with a special auction for the upcoming Martial Trials about to begin, security had been doubled, with guards on duty throughout the night.
But if they were to face the one who attacked the Lie family…
Maya nodded ambiguously. “You may go for now. I have matters to discuss with Uncle Mo Ben.”
Deyuan knew full well that neither he nor his men could hope to confront such a brutal opponent. Their only hope lay in the enigmatic Mo Ben, who had never revealed his full strength.
He bowed and withdrew from the meeting room.
Maya regarded Su Yi with a bright, enchanting smile. “By the way, little brother Su Yi, how goes your cultivation?”
Su Yi’s lips twitched with a hint of bitter humor. “I haven’t broken through to the seventh level yet.” He wondered whether he should tell Maya about last night.
“Don’t worry too much,” Maya said, gliding over with a gentle voice. “To reach the sixth level in just two months is already remarkable.”
Su Yi nodded, carefully avoiding a glance at her serpentine waist, though inwardly he hoped he wouldn’t remain stuck at this level forever. Now that his healing and resilience had been strengthened, perhaps he could become powerful even without cultivating Dou Qi. It all depended on how potent that blood-red substance truly was…
“Go on for now. I’ll come check on you when I have time.”
“Yes, Sister Maya.”
After watching Su Yi’s departing figure, Maya slowly took a seat and massaged her brow, sighing with resignation. “I hope nothing goes wrong. I’d like to stay a while longer.”
“Indeed,” Mo Ben said with concern. “If the Jiang family learns of this, they may use it as an excuse to summon you home. And with an unknown master about, your safety—”
“Don’t worry!” Maya unexpectedly adopted a carefree air, though a sly glint flashed in her alluring eyes. “Isn’t Uncle Mo Ben still here…?”
