Chapter Seventeen: The Peculiarity of Spiritual Power
Old Lion Father wore a disgruntled expression as he watched the three youngsters battling below. He had just been about to engage in a few hundred rounds of sparring with Lion Mother when a sudden surge of energy had erupted from this direction. He didn’t need to guess to know that Black Panther was itching for a fight with Wang Luo. Yet Lion Mother, still worried, had dragged Lion Father back to check on things.
“If these three keep fighting every other day, my peaceful life is probably over,” he thought to himself. “Hmm, I’ll discuss with my wife later—let’s send them off today, the sooner the better. I’ll leave a mark on them, so I can find them if I ever miss them… Hmph, as if I’d miss those two heartless brats…” As his thoughts wandered, his face took on a rather unsavory look, clearly up to no good.
With a heavy thud, Wang Luo and Little White were sent flying once again. Black Panther, breathing a bit heavily, stood his ground and looked across at the human and the beast, the disdain in his eyes now gone. For someone who had forged an equal contract with a human like Wang Luo, he could now understand why Lion Father had called him a freak. Wang Luo kept clashing head-on with him, and no matter how many times he was smashed away, he would stand up again as if nothing had happened. Even Black Panther was beginning to feel winded. Little White Lion was panting hard, tongue lolling, but Wang Luo stood just as before, cheeks flushed, only his eyes a touch dimmer.
Glancing at the unruffled Black Panther, Wang Luo cursed him inwardly for being a monster. He himself possessed Blood Energy, the finest healing elixir, but he had to constantly guide it with his spiritual sense just to keep his body in top condition, all the while circulating his spiritual power. Though his spiritual sense was at mid-Foundation Establishment, this couldn’t go on indefinitely.
Spiritual sense, essentially one’s soul, was far stronger than mere mental power and had many uses. Cultivators used it to control their techniques and compress spiritual power; after Foundation Establishment, it could even be projected outside the body to better observe their surroundings.
Wang Luo’s spiritual sense was far beyond his cultivation level. For one, he’d always used it to control the Heartfire when roasting meat, and for another, to refine bone swords. A year before reaching Foundation Establishment, his spiritual sense was already at the early stage. Now, after succeeding, it had reached mid-stage. Still, this fight with Black Panther was immensely beneficial; Wang Luo was quickly becoming accustomed to his new power.
He discovered that after Foundation Establishment, the spiritual power within his body could coat his surface, enhancing both offense and defense. Unfortunately, for now, the area of coverage was only about the size of a fist.
With a low growl, Little White Lion charged again, Wang Luo right behind him, well aware of Little White’s stubborn temperament. He might look adorable and seem easygoing, but once serious, not even a raging Firehorn Bull could rein him in. Still, Little White rarely got this earnest.
Lion Mother gazed down at the three locked in combat, a trace of reluctance in her eyes, but she didn’t interfere. Over the years, she and Lion Father had protected Little White a bit too much; it was time to let him toughen up. Once they were no longer around, he would have to face the blood and trials of the world alone.
Childish as ever, Lion Father thought little of it. Seeing his son charge bravely again, he nearly clapped with pride, grinning broadly to himself: “Heh, at last the boy’s showing a bit of my spirit!”
Soon enough, Wang Luo and Little White were sent flying once more, only to charge back in. Lion Father watched the chaotic melee, itching to join the fray himself.
Glancing sideways, he saw his wife frowning at the spectacle. Following her gaze, he noticed a fist covered in faint green light slamming hard into Black Panther.
“Dear, what’s wrong? Is there something odd about Little Luo’s fist?”
Lion Father watched for a while but saw nothing special about Wang Luo’s small fist. Though he didn’t know exactly what kind of energy the green light was, it wasn’t unusual—Wang Luo had absorbed that kind of power since he was a child.
Still seeing nothing noteworthy, Lion Father turned to his wife, whose frown had deepened, and couldn’t help but ask.
“Did you see the green light on Luo’er’s fist?” Lion Mother asked, glancing at him. He nodded, puzzled.
“That’s not odd. You know his body’s been absorbing that energy since he was little—even in his sleep. Now, after all this cultivation, there’s just more of it. What’s the problem?” he replied.
Lion Mother shot him a look that nearly stirred his baser instincts again, then said, “Maybe it’s inherited memory that lets him cultivate on his own. But have you ever seen a human use such energy? And if you feel carefully, that power is almost the same as the pure, concentrated magical elements we had at ninth rank!”
With this, realization dawned on Lion Father. They had spent centuries cultivating to ninth rank to possess such pure energy, yet Wang Luo, after just a few years, had already attained it. No wonder Lion Mother found it so strange—why hadn’t he thought of that?
Seeing the revelation on Lion Father’s face, Lion Mother continued, “Humans are greedy by nature. If they ever find out Wang Luo possesses such pure energy, they’ll capture him for certain. And we won’t be by his side.”
“So what do we do? We can’t keep him with us forever!” Lion Father asked anxiously. He knew this continent was full of mighty beings, especially among humans, where true masters lurked everywhere.
He vividly remembered, a hundred years ago, fresh into ninth rank, when a titanic battle had erupted in the forest—a war between a human and a nine-headed serpent. The serpent had already taken human form, yet still lost, becoming that human’s magic beast.
“Keeping him here won’t work. In half a year, once our cultivation stabilizes, the lord deep within the forest will stop shielding us. Then, many human experts will likely come to take us as their magic beasts. We must send Wang Luo to the human world!” Lion Mother said as she watched the three still battling below.
