Chapter Thirty-Five: The Adventurers’ Tavern
The Ruski Inn was the finest establishment in Lawell Town. At this moment, a child approached its entrance, holding skewers of roasted meat in both hands. Upon his head lounged a tiny white lion cub, nibbling on the meat. A red wolf pup, also gnawing on a skewer, perched on his left shoulder, while his right bore a cool and seemingly drowsy little black kitten.
“Hey, kid, go play somewhere else, don’t disturb—” The attendant at the door immediately called out upon seeing the boy. But before he could finish, a gleaming gold coin sailed into his hand, and a child’s voice, still carrying traces of innocence, sounded in his ear.
“Show me to your best room and bring me the finest food!”
The attendant, unable to believe his luck, bit the coin a few times to confirm its authenticity. Once certain, his face blossomed into a fawning smile. With utmost respect, he led the boy to the best room and soon delivered the finest food.
Staring at the table laden with delicacies, Wang Luo swallowed hard. Glancing at the three equally eager beasts, he let out a strange cry and began eating ravenously. Before long, the mountain of food vanished at a pace visible to the naked eye.
After a hearty belch, Wang Luo dragged the three beasts into the bathroom. Once they had washed up, boy and beasts sprawled contentedly on the soft bed.
“Stay here and cultivate, don’t run about. Tomorrow I’ll take you out for a stroll!” Wang Luo lay on the bed for a while, but soon had no choice but to get up. He settled the three beasts and entered a meditative state. Now that he understood much about the Sky Profound Continent, he knew that without strength, one had nothing.
“Father, why are we going back so soon? I haven’t finished playing yet!” Not far from Wang Luo’s room, a little girl was tugging on a middle-aged man’s arm, her voice sweet and petulant. If Wang Luo had been present, he would have recognized her as the confident girl from the talent test.
“No more playing. Soon you’ll be attending Sky Profound Academy to study magic, so we must go home and prepare.” The man pinched her soft little nose, his tone indulgent.
“But Dad, I don’t want to go! I want to stay with you!” The girl shook his arm insistently, pouting.
“No.” The man’s expression turned stern.
“Hmph, Daddy doesn’t love me anymore!” The girl sulked, turning her back on him.
“Lily, be good. It’s for your own good. If you study magic well at Sky Profound Academy, you’ll become a powerful mage. Then you can catch your own magical beasts in the forest!” Rubbing his forehead, the man picked her up and spoke gently, though a hint of worry crept into his eyes. With her temperament, how would she manage at the Academy?
“Father, you don’t know—I saw three adorable pets today! The little white lion was simply the cutest…” At the mention of magical beasts, the girl’s earlier displeasure vanished. She chattered eagerly, recounting her morning encounter with the three delightful creatures.
The man listened with a smile, not paying much attention at first. But when he heard that his own guards had failed to catch up with the three little beasts, his eyes glinted with interest. He began to ask the girl more about them, discussing the three rare creatures.
Meanwhile, the very trio they spoke of was covertly opening a window. With great effort, the little white lion managed to lift the sash without a sound and waved its paw at the Blood Wolf and the Black Panther.
The two exchanged a glance and leapt nimbly onto the sill. Just as the three beasts were about to slip away, a voice sounded from within the room.
“Heading out to play and not taking me along?”
Hearing that all-too-familiar voice, the three beasts turned, sheepish. The little white lion darted into Wang Luo’s arms, rubbing against him coquettishly as his eyes opened.
“You’re always the one with the most ideas and the least discipline! Come on, I’ll take you out!” Wang Luo flicked the little lion’s head and spoke with exasperation.
Night in Lawell Town was livelier than the day. The streets bustled with vendors’ cries. In the snack district, a most unusual group drew the attention of passersby—a young boy clutching skewers in both hands, with three distinct little beasts perched on his head and shoulders: one white and adorable, one red and honest-looking, and one black and cool.
Oblivious to the stares, the boy wandered at his own pace, buying whatever caught his fancy, feeding the beasts and occasionally taking a bite himself. Had anyone observed carefully, they’d have noticed that though his hands seemed full, he’d bought far more than he carried, and despite the unceasing movement of the beasts’ jaws, they showed no sign of being sated.
The Adventurers’ Tavern was the only hotel in Lawell Town, filled with all manner of adventurers—some setting out, some just returned. When the strange quartet entered, they immediately attracted countless eyes.
“Hey, kid, you here to drink or to flirt? Let’s see if your fuzz has even grown in yet! Hahaha…” A drunken brute, catching sight of the boy, laughed boisterously and reached out with a reeking hand to grab him. The other adventurers erupted into rowdy laughter.
Wang Luo regarded the man impassively. He’d been dragged by Li Lei into scenes like this countless times in his past life—why would he be intimidated now? Especially in this world where strength ruled, and fights broke out at the smallest provocation, he was well prepared.
Catching the eager, excited looks from the three beasts on his shoulders, Wang Luo resolved to find a way to address their issues as soon as possible.
“Ah! That’s the three little beasts! Quick, catch them!” Just as Wang Luo was about to kick the brute, a familiar voice rang out. A sly smile flickered across Wang Luo’s lips. In a flash, he appeared beside the brute, grabbed a plate, and smashed it into the man’s face.
For a moment, the adventurers were stunned—then the place erupted into louder cheers. The drunken brute, shocked, sobered up considerably.
“You little brat, you’re asking for it!” Grabbing his greatsword, the man charged at Wang Luo. But by then, Wang Luo was already at the door, flipping him off and patting his own behind in mockery.
The adventurers roared with laughter at the boy’s display. Yet those with sharp eyes watched him with astonishment, unable to believe what they had just seen.
