Chapter 24: Gazing, Undercurrents of Affection
Autumn winds whistled softly as Li Chao stood quietly, letting the edges of his coat flutter and dance with the breeze. His hands fumbled nervously in his pockets, as if searching for something of great importance. After a moment’s effort, his fingers brushed against a soft tissue, which he withdrew with care. Though it appeared to be nothing more than a simple tissue, it seemed to carry the weight of his deepest guilt and concern.
Li Chao turned, his gaze settling on Liu Dan beside him. Her eyes glimmered with crystalline tears, pure and radiant as morning dew, even more striking in the fading glow of the setting sun. The sight touched something deep within Li Chao; his heart clenched, and his steps unconsciously slowed.
He walked gently to her side, offering the tissue with a tender hand. “Dan,” he said, his voice low and sincere, thick with remorse and regret, “I’m truly sorry. I shouldn’t have brought up things that hurt you. Please forgive me.” His eyes were full of concern and apology, as though he hoped his warmth might soothe the wounds within her heart.
Liu Dan took the tissue, dabbing away the pearl-like tears at the corners of her eyes. She lifted her head slightly, gazing into Li Chao’s earnest face, and a wave of inexpressible emotion surged within her. She sighed deeply, her words tinged with a wistfulness that was both envious and helpless.
“If I could have someone like you by my side for the rest of my life, I would have no regrets, no matter what else I lacked.”
Li Chao was moved by her words, but quickly regained his composure and replied with a teasing tone, “Hey, how can you say that? Isn’t your husband good to you? If he hears this, he might come after me!” His light-hearted smile seemed an attempt to dispel the heaviness that pressed upon Liu Dan’s heart.
A faint, bittersweet smile played at Liu Dan’s lips. Suddenly, she reached out and gripped Li Chao’s arm tightly, as if she wished to convey all her feelings through that touch. Li Chao shivered, sensing both the determination in her eyes and the strength and hope that pulsed through her grasp. He was at a loss for how to react.
“What is it, Dan?” Li Chao asked, startled by her sudden gesture, his face full of confusion.
Liu Dan did not answer, only gazed at him with eyes full of gentle affection, her lips trembling as if struggling with some inner turmoil. She took a deep breath, lowered her voice, and said, “Li Chao, will you walk with me in those woods for a little while?”
There was a quiet resolve in her tone that left no room for refusal. Li Chao felt his heart lurch and glanced towards the shadowy woods, catching the nervous yet expectant look Liu Dan gave him. He inhaled deeply and nodded, letting her lead him hand-in-hand into the mysterious forest.
The autumn wind brushed the leaves, whispering secrets as they passed. Fallen leaves danced through the air like golden butterflies, lending a dreamlike atmosphere to the scene. Li Chao’s heartbeat grew ever faster; he could clearly feel the warmth and strength in Liu Dan’s grasp. The touch steadied him, and curiosity mingled with anticipation for the path ahead.
Side by side, they walked slowly down leaf-strewn paths, their footsteps drawing them deeper into the woods. With each step, Li Chao sensed the world changing around him: the air grew fresher, the birdsong clearer and more melodious. Here, there was no chaos from the world outside—only the peace and beauty of nature. Their footsteps became the only music, accompanying their journey forward.
The setting sun stained the sky gold, brilliant as fire, enveloping the world in its magnificent hues. Amid this enchanted beauty, Liu Dan paused beside an ancient tree, her gaze limpid yet filled with unspeakable complexity. She turned her head slightly, looked at Li Chao, and asked in a trembling voice, “Li Chao, do you think I’m beautiful?”
Li Chao was caught off guard by her question. He cleared his throat and answered without hesitation, “You are beautiful.” His tone was steady and sincere, not the least bit perfunctory.
Hearing his reply, a blush rose on Liu Dan’s cheeks, delicate as a flower in the evening glow. She stepped forward, wrapped her arms around Li Chao, and held him close.
She lifted her face to him, her eyes bright with longing, as though waiting for a response. Li Chao stiffened in shock, wholly unprepared for such a direct expression of feeling. A torrent of emotions surged through him—delight, excitement, and a nervous uncertainty. Yet he fought to restrain his impulse, took a slow breath, and said steadily, “Dan, don’t be hasty.”
His words brimmed with care and concern, as if hoping she would reflect carefully on the intricate bond between them. The atmosphere grew suddenly charged and delicate, each breath they took weaving a taut and fragile tapestry in the hush. Time seemed to freeze, leaving only the echo of their heartbeats in the still air.
Li Chao drew a deep breath, striving to calm the storm within. He knew that Liu Dan’s words were not mere impassioned confession, but the earnest pursuit of true love from the depths of her soul. He dared not answer too quickly, fearing he could not give her all that she desired.
But Liu Dan did not let go. She clung to his hand as if afraid he might vanish at any moment, her voice quivering yet unshakably resolute. “Li Chao, I mean every word. I know I’m older than you, and I understand you might not think we’re meant to be. But none of that matters to me. All I care about is you. All I hope for is to spend my life with you.”
A fierce wave of emotion surged through Li Chao as he was moved by her sincerity and the courage she showed in the name of love. He knew he could no longer evade his feelings, nor could he bear to disappoint the depth of her affection and hope.
Slowly, he reached out and gently took her soft hands in his own, drawing her into a close embrace. In that moment, he felt her body tremble, as though from nervous excitement and longing. He lowered his head, his eyes full of infinite tenderness and determination, and whispered, “Dan, I have deep feelings for you as well. I don’t want to make a mistake out of impulse. Why don’t we both take some time, give ourselves space to think it through?”
At his words, Liu Dan slowly lifted her gaze, tears glistening in her eyes.
